Holy Mother of Pearl, pretty sure I would be giving up if weren’t for the fact that today is FINALLY Friday. I don’t know what my problem is, but this week has beaten me down into a crevasse. Yes, a crevasse. Say it a couple of times, it makes you feel sophisticated…or like Jack Black.  Anyway, it is finally Friday and I am ready to throw all caution to the wind and have some FUN! Champions welcomes Sarah Libby, a local, soulful, and superb interpreter of songs encompassing many musical genres, to their stage this finally Friday. Sarah will be taking familiar tunes we all know and love and making them her own as this free event begins at 6:30.

Earnest American country and folk singer-songwriter Richard Buckner will be performing at Engine this evening. A must for fans of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, Buckner’s show will start at 7pm.

Check out some fine banjo-based bluegrass tunes at Elements on Main Street tonight as they welcome back local act Banjo Read for a Friday night full of pickin’ and pluckin’. This free all-ages show will get started up at 8 o’clock.


The Tim Sullivan Trio will be holding it down at The Rack at Sugarloaf tonight. Tim is one talented dude who knows how to make people feel fine through his music. I guarantee he and his pals will be serving up a bunch of tunes that are sure to get you moving so if you’re in the area swing on by starting at 9 o’clock.


Chummies welcomes The Calypso Soldiers for a night filled with modern and classic rock, funk, country, and blues. Starting at 9 they’ll be covering a wide variety of artists and styles as well as performing some of their own original material during this free show.


Local artist Rob Duquette and his band will be bringing a mix of jazz, rock and various other grooves to Gritty’s Freeport location tonight. Enjoy some great live jams as things get started around 8:30.


If you’re in Hallowell tonight check out a fun show at The Kennebec Wharf as The Boneheads return to the stage. The local act, which has become famous for their unpredictable and equally as impressive lives shows that often feature band members switching instruments as well as some dynamic arrangements of beloved tunes and even the occasional hilarious polka take on certain songs, will start things up right around 9.

Soul, funk and jazz act Boogie Mob will be doing it up at Easy Street Lounge in Hallowell this Friday evening. Join in on the fun as tonight’s dance party gets shaking at 9:30.


Toby McAllister of local pop-rock band Sparks The Rescue goes solo tonight for an acoustic performance at Pedro O’Hara’s in Lewiston tonight. Beginning at 8 Toby will be performing some of his favorite STR originals as well as some covers of popular tunes from the past 20 plus years.

Bluegrass act Back Woods Road returns to Guthries this Friday with an energetic set of acoustic tunes featuring the band’s tight harmonies, driving lead solos, and crowd-pleasing compositions. This free and all ages event begins at 8pm.


Alternative rock act Leaving Eden will be bringing the party to GFB Scottish Pub in OOB tonight. Join this high-energy band for some rocking and/or rolling as things get started up at 8.

The Brunswick in OOB is geared up for another fun Friday featuring dance-pop cover act Tickle. Things get shaking at 8:30 with a super duper party mix of some of the best music from today as well as some classic retro funk from the past that’s guaranteed to get you out on the dance floor.


Another free and fun show will be happening at The Dogfish Bar & Grille this evening as Americana/roots rocker Travis James Humphrey returns with some Happy Hour tunes. Travis’ performance begins at 5 o’clock.

Check out the upbeat acoustic roots music of Woodshed Mystics tonight as they perform at Blue. The band’s sound spans everything from folk, soft rock, and adult alternative with lots of harmony singing as well as hints of reggae, calypso, bluegrass and more — basically a whole lotta fun for your Friday as things get underway at 6. 

As the days grow shorter and the year draws to a close Ben Hunsberger, Chris Moore, Ted DeMille, and Chris Dombrowski have prepared a unique and compelling collection of songs that celebrate the Winter Solstice as they come together on stage as Magic Eight Ball. With tunes ranging from originals to traditional folk to contemporary Americana, Magic Eight Ball promises to hold a candle to the impending darkness of winter with this show that’ll begin at 7pm at St. Lawrence Arts.

Andy’s welcomes back Maine-based, acoustic alternative artist John Hasnip to the stage this evening. Starting around 7 John will be playing some fun tunes for you to bust a move or two to this Friday.

Portland piano man Mike Maurice will be back at MJ’s Wine Bar tonight for a free show featuring some funk, soul and jazz sounds. Enjoy some tunes and a glass of vino as this evening’s performance gets underway at 8pm.

Miss Maybell & Slimpickin’s bring some old time music of the Americana, jug band, ragtime, blues, jazz and country genres to Blue tonight. Transport yourself back in time as things get swinging right around 8.

Local musician Rexy Dinosaur returns with saxophone in claws to the Dogfish Bar & Grille tonight. Rexy will be joined by Tom Douglas on guitar and Geoff Williams on percussion as the trio bring you a mix of blues, hip hop and jazz beginning at 8 o’clock.

Local fellas Sylvain’s Acadian Aces are back at Salvage BBQ on Congress Street this finally Friday. Beginning at 8:30 these talented gents will be serving up some authentic Cajun tunes for you to dance around to.

An evening of festive folly and straight up rock and roll will be happening at Portland House of Music and Events tonight as the Marshall Nelson Trio presents A Nightmare Before Christmas beginning at 9pm. No, this talented local RnR band won’t be covering tunes from the seminal Tim Burton film, but they will however be teaming up with Maine acts Eldemur Krimm, Tim Mercer, Saiyid Brent and some other special guests for a night of musical merriment. Get rockin’ around the PHOME dance floor as this show starts up at 9 o’clock.

Tonight get wild and weird with some rock, pop, R&B, electro, and punk inspired sounds as KGFREEZE, Bully Mammoth, Wait, and Husks come together for what is guaranteed to be a bombastic bash at Empire. Local four-piece cover act, Fighting Fiction will be providing the perfect soundtrack for your Friday night with a wide variety of material from all kinds of genres including modern pop, rock, alternative, country, classic rock and more. Get your fill of sultry salsa tunes with a bit of a punk edge as salsacore El Malo returns to Blue for a fun show that gets started at 10 this Friday evening.

MB Padfield brings her distinct fusion of pop, rock, blues, jazz and hip-hop elements back to RiRa tonight. Check out Padfield’s guitar skills and smoky vocals as things get underway at 10pm.


Boston-based Beatles tribute band, Studio Two, takes you back to a time when the world first met the Fab Four and fell in love with a group of mop-haired lads from Liverpool. Studio Two plays a plethora of Beatles favorites from their early years during a high-energy show, which features the four fellas decked out in full 60s garb. Mike Preston & The Buckstop Band bring some acoustic country to Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza for the venues Friday Night Acoustic Music Series. Join in on the fun as this free, all ages show will get swinging at 7 tonight.

Starting at 8:30 tonight you can check out Pete Witham & The Cozmik Zombies take over The Frog & Turtle with their own brand of twisted Americana and rockabilly jams. These fellas bring the fun to this free and all ages Friday night party so check it out if you’re downtown this evening.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
