Capture The Sun, Destination: Void & Objet rock Empire in Portland tonight

We’re almost there! It’s finally Thursday and that means we’re drawing in on the freakin’ weekend, babies! Tonight is packing some serious punch so hoist up those Party Pants and get out there! Check out sweet shindigs tonight such as Eric Bettencourt & Will Mallett at Blue, Denny Breau at the Quad at Bates, Prateek Poddar at Andy’s, Vinyl Tap at Portland Lobster Company, Ted Nugent at Aura, Seth Warner Duo at Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza, Ronda Dale Band at the Winslow Park Summer Concert Series, and more.


Acoustic Americana act Double Entendre will be hosting an open bluegrass jam at The Gin Mill in Augusta this evening. Join in on the musical revelry as things get underway at 7:30pm.


Acoustic act Uke n’ Smile will be hosting another open mic event over at The Local Buzz. All musicians of varying skills and genres are welcome to get up on the microphone and perform as things get underway right around 7:30pm.


Singer-songwriter Ronda Dale brings her band to Freeport tonight as they perform as part of the Winslow Park Summer Concert Series. Ronda’s sound is comparable to something you’d expect if Patsy Cline, Peggy Lee and Willie Nelson threw a party. This evening’s family-friendly show will start up right around 6:30pm.


If you aren’t in Portland tonight and find yourself up near the Lewiston/Auburn area, you should check out the talented Denny Breau as he brings his rhythmically enticing guitar style to life at the Quad at Bates in Lewiston. Denny is the younger brother of acclaimed guitarist Lenny Breau, who was also from Maine. If you’ve never heard of Lenny Breau and play guitar, I’d highly recommend checking out his stuff; it’s pretty crazy. Denny will be doing his thing beginning at 6:30 tonight, so if you’re around, check it out.



Pop-rock and roller Alex Roy will be performing a set of original tunes and cover songs at Jimmy The Greek’s this Thirsty Thursday. Tonight’s event is free and sure to be a good time so swing through if you’re in the area as the music starts up at 7.Maine-based party band The GE3ks will be bringing the good times to The Pier Patio Pub tonight. Starting at 9 you’ll be guaranteed to bust a move out on the dance floor to some of the best 80’s pop, dance, New Wave, hard rock, rap and one hit wonder tunes around.


For the past month or so Eric Bettencourt has been kicking around town, venturing away from his home in Austin, TX, where I’m sure he’s been keeping it weird to sing his ass off and pluck some guitar strings like it’s nobody’s business, but something tells me he won’t be around for long so make sure you join this Maine native tonight over at Blue on Congress Street. Eric will be joined by alt-country/Americana singer-songwriter Will Mallett of the Mallett Brothers Band for a show that’ll start up right around 6pm tonight.

Vinyl Tap will be partying down out on the Portland Lobster Company deck this evening with all of your favorite dance jams. Vinyl Tap is known for making people bust a move to their wide array of danceable cover tunes that span between everything from everything The Beatles to Huey Lewis, Cee Lo Green, Stevie Wonder, The Dead and many, many more. There’s never a cover charge so check it out starting at 6:30.

Local four-piece rock n’ roll band, Riot Act will go quiet tonight for an acoustic set at The Porthole. Tonight’s free show gets started out on the deck right around 7 o’clock.

Boston-based folk and Americana singer, songwriter and guitarist Prateek Poddar will be performing at Andy’s Old Port Pub this evening. Poddar’s acoustic set will showcase sounds influenced by such artist as Ryan Adams, Jason Isbell, Townes Van Zandt, and more. This free and all-ages event begins at 7pm.

MB Padfield brings her fun fusion of pop, rock, blues, jazz and hip-hop elements back to Brian Boru tonight. Check out Padfield’s impressive guitar skills and smoky vocals as things get underway at 7:30 followed by dance songs spun by DJ Tiny Dancer.

Motor City Madman, Ted Nugent comes to town for a show at Aura tonight. Nugent has carved a permanent place in rock and roll history as the ultimate guitar-shredding showman, selling more than 40 million albums, performing over 6,500 high-octane live shows, and continuing to set attendance records at venues around the globe. You can see him for yourself as he takes to the stage starting at 8 o’clock.

Blue welcomes back Portland-based contemporary bluegrass band Cumberland Crossing for an evening of bustling bluegrass music. Tonight’s free show gets kickin’ around 8 and will feature a jam session open to any and all musicians who would like to participate.

Prepare to bring the thunder tonight as local, heavy-hitting rock acts Capture The Sun, Destination: Void and Objet join forces to melt faces at Empire. Get ready to be properly propelled into metal and rock n’ roll stratospheres during this Thursday night throw down as things get heavy upstairs beginning at 9.

Toby McAllister of local pop-rock band Sparks The Rescue will be performing a solo set out on the Oasis patio this evening. Starting at 9pm Toby will be performing some of his favorite STR originals as well as some covers of popular tunes from the past 20 plus years.

Ben Kilcollins & The Vargas Twins return to RiRa tonight for some sweet, acoustic sounds. You know Ben from his time spent fronting local pop-rock act, Kilcollins, but this evening he teams up with the talented Vargas Twins for some fun cover tunes and original songs beginning at 9pm.

WESTBROOKLenny’s at Hawkes Plaza welcomes back local act Seth Warner Duo, which features multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Seth Warner taking lead on songs in the vein of blues, country, folk, re-imagined jazz and songbook standards. Don’t miss out on the fun as this free, all-ages show gets start up right around 7 o’clock.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
