I need a solid rock and roll reset after a crazy, busy week of working and therefore I am pumped to get my face melted by Northern California pioneers of stoner rock and doom metal, Sleep, as they play their only New England date tonight at the State Theatre. Doom-tinged metal band Windhand will kick off this all ages show starting at 8 o’clock.
I feel like I’ll be doing a lot of running around tonight as there’s another epic show up the street from Sleep happening over at SPACE Gallery on Congress Street. Portland piano-man Jimmy Dority has reassembled his 21-piece orchestra known as Jimmy Do Right & The Pop Go Boom to perform songs from their long-anticipated self-titled debut albuml. The songs themselves recall the ”wall-of-sound” recordings of 60’s giants such as Phil Spector, Brian Wilson, and Serge Gainsbourg, with orchestrations that are reminiscent of Motown-inspired R&B and French chanson. Opening the night will be Woodpainting who bring their ‘infectious pop drama’ and ‘narrative-based bubblegum soap-opera’ sounds to the stage starting at 8:30.
Central Maine band Skosh brings their badass blend of funk, rock and ska up to the Oasis patio tonight for a party that’s guaranteed to please. Join the fellas for this free show that’ll get cranking right around 9 o’clock.
