ARUNDEL 

If you’re south of Portland tonight do not miss a must-see show happening at the Vinegar Hill Music Theatre in Arundel. Tonight a trifecta of talented acts will grace the stage of this beautiful theatre with sounds full of Americana, roots, folk-rock and bluesy goodness. Beginning at 6 this all ages show will feature stories and songs from Shanna Underwood and Wanderlost, Samuel James and Eric Bettencourt.

AUBURN

Turkey Hollow, which is comprised of local artists Dave Rowe and Denny Breau, plays a uniquely kind of acoustic country-folk music that combines bluegrass, folk and country with dashes of blues, Cajun and Celtic. Tonight they reunite on the stage of Concerts for a Cause in Auburn for a special all ages performance that’ll get underway at 7:30pm.

If you’re Fridaying in Auburn tonight, check out a free rock n’ roll show at Gritty’s with local rockers Tilden Katz. These fellas will be getting the party started right around 8 o’clock.

BANGOR

If you find yourself Fridaying up in the Central Maine area get on over to The Nocturnem Draft Haus in Bangor as they present another fine evening of jazz tunes and musical merriment with local act The Bill Barnes Trio. This free 21+ shindig gets swingin’ at 8 o’clock.

Full throttle into the freakin’ weekend with a free show up at Hollywood Casino with The Dapper Gents. These fellas will be getting things rollin’ right around 8 with their blend of folk, pop and rock that’s guaranteed to be a whole lot of fun so swing through if you’re in the area this evening.

A fun night of progressive, alternative and modern rock will be taking over the Penobscot Pour House up in Bangor tonight as the Trendy Robots get ready to party with an electrifying set of songs that’ll start up at 8 o’clock.

BIDDEFORD

The Kevin Midgley Players make their way to Elements on Main Street in Biddeford tonight for some Americana and Delta blues tunes. Join them for some good times, good tunes, and good brews as this free, all ages show starts up at 8.

BREWER

Indie rock outfit Paper Lions will be performing at the Next Generation Theatre in Brewer this Friday evening. This all ages show will start up at 7pm.

BRUNSWICK

The Daniel Coast Bar + Bistro welcomes Sarah Libby, a local, soulful, and superb interpreter of songs encompassing many musical genres, to their stage tonight. Sarah will be taking familiar tunes we all know and love and making them her own as this free all ages event begins at 7pm.

BUXTON 

Dance it out down at Skip’s Lounge as dance/pop cover act Tickle gets ready to bring the house down with some of the best of today’s music mixed in with a little bit of retro funk. The party starts at 9 tonight.

GRAY

Get ready for some rollicking rockabilly courtesy of Ragged Jack as the band plays a free show Tailgate Bar & Grill this evening. This fun show starts up at 8:30pm.

HALLOWELL

Get the party started at the Kennebec Wharf tonight with local alt-rock act Zealous Bellus. Let the good times roll as this free shindig starts shaking at 9 o’clock.

The Scolded Dogs are back to make some noise at Easy Street Lounge tonight as they bring some more party-rockin’ tunes to the stage for another free show. Starting at 9:30 you can expect to hear some awesome originals as well as covers of such acts as Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg and more.

KENNEBUNK

Ben Kilcollins will be hanging out at Federal Jacks this finally Friday for some sweet, acoustic singer-songwriter action. You know Ben from his time spent pop-rockin’ with his band Kilcollins, but this evening he goes solo and acoustic with some guitar-based cover tunes and originals starting right around 9 o’clock.

LEWISTON 

Toby McAllister of local pop-rock act Sparks The Rescue will be going solo and acoustic tonight for a fun show at Pedro O’Hara’s tonight. Join Toby for this free show as things get underway right around 8pm.

OLD ORCHARD BEACH 

Local act Unfinished Business brings the party to GFB Scottish Pub in OOB tonight with their mix of classic rock and new country covers. Get ready to bust a move out on the dance floor as this free shindig starts shakin’ right around 8pm.

Seacoast band Red Sky Mary will be bringing some high-energy rock and roll to the stage of Last Call in Old Orchard Beach this finally Friday. Get ready to have some serious fun as these fellas prepare to blast off into the rock and roll stratosphere with a bunch of fun covers and catchy originals as this free show gets crankin’ around 8 o’clock.

Tonight electro-pop rock act Dean Ford and The Keepsakes will be rockin’ The Brunswick. This show is free and is guaranteed to be chock full of pulsating beats, infections hooks, screaming synths, shredding guitar, and soaring singalongs as things get jumping at 8:30.

PORTLAND

A free and fun First Friday show happens over at the Dogfish Bar & Grille this evening as roots rocker Travis James Humphrey returns for an all ages Happy Hour set that’ll start up right around 5 o’clock.

It’s going to be a gorgeous evening to party out on the deck of the Porthole as The Substitutes return to the outdoor stage to bring you the best in old school pop and rock with covers from such legendary bands as The Beatles, The Who, The Monkees and more. Even better, this evening’s show is absolutely free and family friendly, so if you’re looking to wind down your working week with some good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll swing on by and check ‘em out beginning at 5:30.

Psychedelic rock and/or roller Jeff Beam and his band will be bringing some original tunes to the outdoor stage in Congress Square Park tonight. Enjoy another beautiful evening downtown while taking in some terrific live music as this all ages and free show starts up at 6pm.

Blue welcomes back local bluegrass duo Darlin’ Corey this First Friday. Starting at 6 stop on by and check out the pair’s delightful blend of vocal harmonies, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitars that make some truly unique bluegrass, old timey, and folk sounds.

Pop-rock and Americana act the Jason Spooner Band will be helping you ease into the freakin’ weekend with a party outside on the deck at Portland Lobster Company. This free all-ages shindig starts up at 6:30.

Andy’s Old Port Pub is the place to be for some rock, blues, R&B, and jazzy funk tunes as 13 Scotland Road returns for a free show that gets underway right around 7pm.

If you’re downtown this evening doing the First Friday thing, be sure to take in tonight’s performance by Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble at Blue on Congress Street. Starting at 8 the act will be performing music from the Middle East and Turkey on such unique and beautiful instruments as oud (fretless Middle Eastern lute), qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern micro-tonal zither), nay (ancient Middle Eastern reed flute), and Middle Eastern percussion.

Tonight One Longfellow Square hosts a Tribute to Bob Dylan and The Band featuring The The Band Band. This group of veteran musicians showcases the breadth and depth of The Band’s distinctively original Americana music with classics such as Up on Cripple Creek, The Weight and The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, as well as some deeper cuts from The Band’s catalog. For tonight’s show, they’ll also be performing some Dylan classics as things start up at 8.

MJ’s Wine Bar welcomes back Portland piano man Mike Maurice to their lounge for another Friday filled with funk, soul and jazz selections. Join Mike and imbibe in some delicious vino as things get underway at 8pm.

The Maine Dead Project will be commemorating the end of their twenty week (!) residency at Portland House of Music and Events tonight with a special three set bash dedicated to the Dead. They’ll be performing one of the classic 1980 Radio City Music Hall concerts in its entirety, with help on the opening acoustic set from their pals in The Working Dead. The party starts at 9 o’clock.

Port City Musc Hall has a pretty awesome show happening tonight as they welcome NY indie electro-rock act Jimkata to the stage alongside Burlington electro duo Argonaut & Wasp. Things are bound to get eclectic, weird and wonderful starting right around 9 o’clock, so check it out.

Another First Friday at Blue means that local act The Evan King Group will be laying down some smooth jazz and funky soul. Grab a drink and get cozy as things get started around 10.

If you’re looking to get down to some fun tunes then make some moves over to RiRa in the Old Port where Doubting Gravity will be getting the party started right around 10 with their upbeat, original pop rock.

RANGELEY

Moose Alley will be filled with great music all weekend long as the Rangeley Americana Fest kicks off tonight with performances by The Mallett Brothers Band, The Ghost of Paul Revere and more as one ticket price of $10, gets you in to experience it all, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! Local acoustic folk-rock cover act Rippleton Cross returns to Gilbert’s Chowder House in Windham this evening. Beginning at 6pm the duo will be performing songs from such artists as Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Cat Stevens and many more.

 

 

 

Holly Nunan

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
