The fact that Monday was a holiday might be the reason as to why it seems like this week is genuinely flying by, but I gotta say, no complaints over here! If you’re looking to wind down or party it up this Wednesday, there are lots of places to check out. Here are the haps for your Hump Day including The Maine Dead Project at Portland House of Music, Eric Bettencourt & Friends at Portland Lobster Company, The Squid Jiggers at Bull Feeney’s, Rap Night at Asylum, Bess Berg & Company at The Frog and Turtle and more!


Local organ-based trio Micromasse will be playing live at Frontier as part of the venue’s free Wednesday night music series. Check out the melodic and mesmerizing sounds of Chris Sweet, Max Cantlin and Pete Dugas as the three combine guitar, drums and organ to pump out some superior instrumental jams starting at 7:30.


If you’re hanging in Gray tonight stop on by Cole Farms for this week’s Open Mic with local musician Dave Jacquet. It’s a free event, there’s tasty food and delicious drinks, and guaranteed to be a whole lot of fun, so check it out as things get started up at 7.


Hey all of you Dead loving heads! You’ve got two chances to get your noodle on down at Portland House of Music and Events this Wednesday. The first being Happy Hour with The Working Dead as they play a free show this evening. Beginning at 4:30 this talented trio will be playing all your favorite Grateful Dead tunes as well as various other covers from some of the most beloved jam bands around, so make some plans to check it out.

Chances are it’s been a hot minute since you’ve seen singer, songwriter and guitarist, Eric Bettencourt around town playing his guit-fiddle and singing his head off as he’s been spending the majority of his time getting weird down in Austin, Texas. Tonight he returns to Portland for a fun show filled with a few friends out on the deck of the Portland Lobster Company. This free all ages shindig gets swinging around 6:30pm.

Blue’s Irish Concert Series continues with a featured performance from Claire Egan, Eoin O’Neill, Paraic Mac Donnchadha, Terrance O’Reilly from Ireland. Music starts at 7:30 and will be followed by another Wednesday evening Irish Session open to any and all musicians looking to get up on stage and jam.

World renowned virtuosic cello innovator, lyric poet, kazoo master, guitar shredder, and galavanting banjo clumper Rushad Eggleston comes to town for a show at One Longfellow Square. Join him for some musical meanderings as things get underway at 8pm.

Over at Bull Feeney’s you can check out another fun evening of folk tunes courtesy of local duo the Squid Jiggers. This talented pair will be making some sounds that pair perfectly with an ice cold pint starting right around 8pm, so swing on by and check them out if you’re in the downtown area tonight.

Check out the down-home, acoustic roots sounds of David Beam and the Custom House Gang at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in Portland this Wednesday. This lively bunch will be playing some great music for your midweek wind down so swing through and enjoy this free show starting at 8.

Get your folk-pop on tonight with the Dapper Gents Duo as they return to the stage of RiRa for some musical merriment during a free, 21+ show that’ll get started up at 9pm.

Rap Night at Asylum in Portland will be highlighting some local hip-hop with another installment of their midweek party hosted by ill by instinct and El Shupacabra. Each and every Wednesday night these dudes team up to host this epic rap ruckus that features some of the best and brightest emcees, producers and DJs around. Things get started at 9 with early and late night open mic cyphers, and as always, ladies get in free, so stop through and check it out!

Your second chance to catch some great tunes and vibes happens over at Portland House of Music as Doug Emery, Justin Maxwell, Joshua M. Robbins, Christopher Sweet, Tim Sullivan and Ryan Benoit of The Maine Dead Project kick off their summer residency. These talented musicians will be bringing the sounds of the Grateful Dead and more to the stage tonight as things get underway at 9pm.


Bess Berg and Company bring some midweek musical merriment to the Frog and Turtle in Westbrook. Starting at 7:30pm, you can stop in and enjoy an evening of jazz piano paired with bass, sax and drums during this free all-ages event.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am.
