It’s almost time to join the party known as The Weekend so you might as well start preparing now. Here’s what the what is for your weekend pre-game as we get down on it this Thursday! Check out some fun shows such as Ron Bergeron at Bueno Loco, an open mic with Uke n’ Smile at the Local Buzz, Elise Testone at Portland House of Music, Zapion Middle Eastern Ensemble with special guest Rosa Noreen at Blue, Battery Steele, Suburban Samurai & Seasonal Disorders at Hella Good Tacos, Anni Clark at Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza, and more!


Uke n’ Smile returns to the Local Buzz this evening for another open mic.  All musicians of different skills and genres are welcome as this free, creative gathering gets underway at 7:30.


Check out local musician Ron Bergeron as he plays another free show at Bueno Loco in Falmouth tonight. Ron will be getting things kicked into gear right around 6 o’clock with tons great covers from The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springstree, Tom Petty, Queen, Paul Simon and many more.


Folk-rock duo Rippleton Cross will be at The Kennebec Wharf tonight. This free event will feature the pair performing covers of songs by such artists as Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Cat Stevens and many more as things get started at 9pm.

Local songstress Sa Rah brings her evening of serenades back to the Easy Street Lounge tonight, so make some plans to get cozy and enjoy her acoustic set of songs as things start up at 9:30.


Local artist Jim Gallant brings a mix of Americana, blues, folk, bluegrass and rockabilly to Andy’s Old Port Pub tonight. Join him for a free evening of music as this all ages show starts at 7 o’clock.

Local alternative folk act Northwood is back at Blue this evening for some foot-stomping good times. Northwood starts making some noise right around 7 o’clock so make some plans to check ‘em out.

The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. Tonight they’ll be joined by the South Portland High School Jazz Ensemble as music starts up at 8pm.

Former American Idol contestant Elise Testone will be performing at Portland House of Music and Events tonight. Testone draws musical influences from several styles including smooth jazz and hard rock. Testone competed in the 11th season of American Idol, putting her spin on tunes by Janis Joplin, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and more, eventually placing sixth. Check her out tonight as this 18+ show starts up at 8 o’clock with an opening set from local soul act Gina & The Red Eye Flight Crew.

Don’t miss an evening show filled with some contemporary Middle Eastern music and dance as Zapion Middle Eastern Ensemble performs at Blue alongside special guest dancer Rosa Noreen beginning at 9pm this Thursday.

Ben Kilcollins & The Vargas Twins will be hanging out at RiRa for some sweet, acoustic action. You know Ben from his time spent pop-rockin’ with his band Kilcollins, but this evening he teams up with the talented Vargas Twins for some fun cover tunes and originals starting right around 9 o’clock.

Don’t miss an awesome (and FREE!) punk rock show that’ll be shaking the foundation of Hella Good Tacos tonight as they welcome Battery Steele, Suburban Samurai and Seasonal Disorders for a night of debauchery and fun. Tonight’s party will get crankin’ right around 9 o’clock so be sure to swing through and check it out if you’re in the area tonight.

Tonight a ton of talented local musicians come together to pay tribute to British punk and pop icon, Billy Idol. Upstairs at Empire starting at 9:30 you can check out Rebel Yell: A Tribute to Billy Idol that’ll feature members from Sunset Hearts, Leverett, Foam Castles, Brenda, Cadaverette, Lousy and others as they capture the energy of one of MTV’s leading hit makers all night long.


Award-winning folk artist Anni Clark returns to Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza this Thursday evening. Clark will be bringing her acoustic 12-string up to the stage for some original tunes starting at 7.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
