Make your way into the freakin’ weekend with one heck of a party at the Union Street Brick Church in Bangor tonight as 3 of Maine’s most epic jam bands join forces for a night of musical merriment. Beginning at 7 o’clock you can check out sets from Merther, Fules Gold and Hambone as they bring some soulful, energetic jams to the stage all night long.
The Summer Festival Of The Arts presents The St. Paddy’s Day Green Ball as their annual fundraiser this year. Established over thirty years ago, Summer Festival of the Arts – SFOA – on Mount Desert Island offers a three-week arts experience for young people entering grades 1 through 11. This year’s theme is obviously green as well as rock and/or roll as they welcome local rockabilly act The Crown Vics to the stage of the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel in Bar Harbor right around 7pm to help raise money for this important program.
Local duo October Road will be performing at Elements on Main Street in Biddeford this Friday evening. Starting at 8 check out the duo’s set of Americana and folk rock tunes at this free, all-ages show.
Stone Mountain Arts Center in Brownfield presents A Lotta Folk Music tonight as three great folk singers come together on stage for a night of joyful music. Beginning at 8 check out an evening of songs and stories from Christine Lavin, Don White, and Vance Gilbert.
Get your Friday night rolling along with some live, acoustic tunes from local singer-songwriter Bill Howard. Starting at 7 Bill will be playing some songs at tonight’s free show at The Daniel Inn Coast Bar + Bistro.
The Scolded Dogs will be bringing the party to The Rack tonight for a free show that’ll feature their killer mix of original jams and classic covers that span all kinds of genres and artists such as Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg, and many, many more. The good times start rolling along a 9 o’clock.
Alter Igor will be rocking out The Kennebec Wharf in Hallowell with their blend of classic rock tunes tonight. The band will be playing everything from Nick Lowe to The Who and many, many more iconic rock n’ rollers as they get things underway right around 9 o’clock.
The Widowmaker Lounge presents Studio Two, the rock and roll era Beatles tribute band that’ll take you back to the early 60’s with some of the Fab Four’s finest tunes. Tonight’s free show gets swinging at 9:30pm.
Maine-based bluegrass band Back Woods Road return to Guthries in Lewiston this Friday with an energetic set of acoustic tunes. Check out Back Woods Road’s tight harmonies, hard driving lead solos, and crowd-pleasing tunes as things get underway at 8pm during tonight’s free show.
If you’ve been hitting the slopes and are looking to unwind, then swing over to Sliders where Mitch Alden will be performing at a free show this evening. Mitch Aldren is the creative force behind alternative rock band Now is Now and will be going solo for an acoustic set that’ll start up right around 7 o’clock.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH
Dance it out down at The Brunswick in Old Orchard Beach as dance/pop cover act Tickle gets ready to bring the house down with some of the best of today’s music mixed in with a little touch of retro funk. The party starts at 8:30 tonight.
Southern Maine cover band Country Roads will be bringing the boot-scootin’ boogie to Jimmy The Greek’s tonight as they play tunes from such acts as Florida Georgia Line, George Strait, Jason Aldrean, Kenny Chesney, Brooks & Dunn and much, much more during a fun Friday night show that’ll get fired up at 8:30.
Local pop-rock outfit The Still returns to Portland House of Music and Events for another Happy Hour set that’ll get started at 4 o’clock. Enjoy some good tunes, good times, and great drink specials with some great people during this free and fun event.
Shanna Underwood hosts another Songwriters in the Round tonight at Blue on Congress Street in Portland. Beginning at 6 Shanna will be joined by two other local singer-songwriters to play some original tunes, tell stories about the songs, and improvise with each other. This show is free and guaranteed to be a great way to kick-start your Friday, so be sure to check it out.
Down on Commercial Street in the Old Port, you can check out the Americana and blues stylings of local musician Frank Fotusky as he takes to the stage of Andy’s Old Port Pub for a free show starting at 7 o’clock.
Bayside Bowl will be heating up with some summery sounds as the Raging Brass Reggae Horns perform classic 60’s Jamaican ska, rocksteady and roots reggae instrumentals during this free, all ages party. The fun starts at 8 o’clock.
Acoustic Americana and bluegrass band The Blackberry Bushes will be performing at Blue tonight. The act’s sound is known to fall somewhere between Gillian Welch and The Infamous Stringdusters. You can check them out for yourself in this lovely, intimate setting as things get underway at 8 o’clock.
Jazz it up this Friday at the Dogfish Bar & Grille on Free Street in Portland with the cats of LQH (Chas Lester, Tyler Quist, and Evan Haines) as they bring their melting pot of sound — everything from soul, jazz, funk, and rock — over to The Dogfish starting at 8 tonight.
Join local songstress Kristel Hayes, singer-songwriter Travis James Humphrey, and musician Sam Balentine and friends for an evening of music celebrating the early work of two of Americana music’s most prolific and beloved songwriters, Patty Griffin and John Prine. Tonight’s performance will feature the stripped down style of each of their debut albums from start to finish. Things get underway at 8pm and all proceeds from this event will directly benefit the hosting venue of this show, One Longfellow Square.
Get down to some Drum & Bass action tonight over at Flask Lounge in Portland as The Digital Mercenaries along with GRIMMkEYS, Who Cares?, Bobby Biggunz, and Nocturnal serve up some sounds that certain to make you shake your groove thing. Tonight’s free rager gets underway at 9 o’clock.
Quirky and bright piano-led pop trio Jukebox the Ghost will be bringing some fun sounds to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. Joining them for this finally Friday, 18+ party will be orchestral indie pop act The Family Crest, who’ll get things going right around 9 o’clock.
Andi Fawcett and the fellas of Doubting Gravity will be bringing you some of the best original pop-rock around as they play a free show upstairs at Brian Boru in the Old Port tonight. Starting at 9:30 fill your Friday with some good times and good tunes at this free, 21+ dance party!
Empire’s monthly music event that celebrates all things roots and Americana happens once again this Friday as they welcome Starcrossed Losers, Crushed Out, Joel Thetford and Jay Bragg (you know Jay as half of North of Nashville) to the stage for an evening of mighty fine music during this installment of Roots in the Attic. String plucking, foot-stomping and soul-singing will get underway upstairs right around 9 o’clock.
Clara Junken, one of my favorite locally-based blues rock and/or rollers, will be holding it down at Blue tonight beginning at 10. Clara will be playing both her own terrific material as well as few cover tunes during this free event, so grab some friends, enjoy a delicious cocktail and let Ms. Junken serenade you into the evening hours.
Tonight electro-pop rock act Dean Ford & The Keepsakes will be treating RiRa to a night of electrified pop, rock and dance music. This show is free and is guaranteed to be chock full of pulsating beats, infections hooks, screaming synths, shredding guitar, and soaring vocals as things get underway right around 10pm.

There’s a ton of stuff happening early on tonight such as the fun event happening over at Thatcher’s in South Portland where starting at 7 Portland’s own The Substitutes will be bringing you the best in old school pop and rock with everything from The Beatles to The Who, The Monkees and more. Even better, this evening’s show is absolutely free, so if you’re looking to wind down your work week with some good ol’ fashioned rock n’ roll, swing on by and check ‘em out.
If you’re in Westbrook tonight, make some moves over to The Frog and Turtle on Main Street where local act Downeast Soul Coalition will be bringing the boogie with a Friday night show full of solid soul music. Things get underway at tonight’s free shindig right around 8:30.
Vocalist Heather Masse is one-third of the Juno Award-winning Canadian trio The Wailin’ Jennys. This evening Heather joins forces with pianist and former 317 Main Community Music Center teacher, Jed Wilson for a live performance at the First Parish Congregational Church in Yarmouth. Beginning at 7 the duo will be showcasing some folk, pop and bluegrass sounds.
Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
