St. Patrick’s Day falling on a Thursday is a truly marvelous thing because you can basically begin the weekend now if you want. Hopefully Irish eyes will smile upon you should you choose to call out of work tomorrow, ha! Anyway if you’re looking to celebrate today by downing some green beer and checking out some tunes, here are the happenings for your St. Paddy’s Day. Many, many places to take in some traditional and non-traditional music including Enter The Haggis and The Pubcrawlers at Port City Music Hall, Scolded Dogs at The Liberal Cup, Welterweight at Blue, Jason Spooner Band at Brian Boru, Kilcollins at RiRa, The Squid Jiggers at Mayo Street Arts, Hollowbody Electric at Rock Harbor Pub & Brewery, The Work Trucks at The Run of the Mill and so much more. Sláinte!
If you’ve got the Luck of the Irish, and happen to have this afternoon off, then make some plans to have some fun with the fellas in the Dum Bums as they play a free show up at the Fire House Grille beginning at 1 o’clock. There’ll be lots of classic tunes to do a jig to, so check it out if you’re in the area today.
Later on at the Fire House Grille you can join the Chad Porter Band for some serious fun as they continue the St. Paddy’s Day celebrations with a free show that’ll get started up at 6. This evening you might hear some covers of Ray Lamontagne, Ceelo Green, Blake Shelton and more as well as some catchy original compositions.
The Daniel Inn Coast Bar & Bistro welcomes back local musician Peter Carriveau for an evening of tunes this Thursday. Peter has numerous influences in his music from folk to Americana to rock. During this free, all-ages show that starts up at 6 o’clock, you’re likely to hear songs by artists like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Gram Parsons, Steve Goodman, Van Morrison, The Beatles, Steve Earl, Ray Lamontagne, and many more, so be sure to stop by if you’re in Brunswick tonight.
Maine-based singer-songwriter Mike Rodrigue returns to The Rack tonight for some acoustic fun. This free Thursday night show will get underway at 7pm.

The Squid Jiggers return to Mayo Street Arts this evening for another rollicking night of musical shenanigans on the one day of the year when everyone is Irish. Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett, The Squid Jiggers, are Maine natives but they both grew up steeped in folk traditions of sea chanteys, songs from across the ocean and singalongs. They’ll bring those singalongs to life with a bit of Irish flair as tonight’s event gets underway at 7pm.
If I were out celebrating my heritage this evening rather than going to bed at dusk to get up at the asscrack of dawn to do The TV, then I’d probably head on over to Blue to check out local folk-rock outfit Welterweight‘s tribute set to the inimitable Thin Lizzy. Starting at 7 o’clock they’ll be conjuring up the tunes of Ireland’s favorite sons.
The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to the stage of One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. You can check them out as things begin right around 8pm.
Local musician Michael Taylor of Rustic Overtones, Royal Hammer, The Awesome, and many more musical acts from around town, returns to Sonny’s lounge tonight for a set of songs. Join Taylor for some good times and good tunes as things start up during tonight’s free show at 8:30pm.
RiRa will also be celebrating all things Irish today and that celebration continues on through the night with a free set from local pop-rockers Kilcollins. Be a part of the shenanigans as things get underway at 9 o’clock.
