Sweet flippin’ Thursday! We’re making some serious strides towards the freakin’ weekend, and even though it’s been sort of an uphill struggle all week, I have no doubt that today is going to be a good day! There are a ton of shows going on for you to get out there and properly do some Thursday night throwing down, so take a quick gander and get to it at such shows as Jenny Van West & Jon Cooper at Blue, Keanu Keanu at The Liberal Cup, Pitch Black Ribbons at The Rack, Metal Church & Hatchet at Asylum, Crimewave at Bull Feeney’s, Vinyl Tap at Brian Boru and more!
Local acoustic act, Uke n’ Smile, will be hosting an Open Mic night at the Local Buzz this evening. Beginning at 7 o’clock all reasonably capable musicians are more than welcome to play some tunes or you can come and sing with the fellas in Uke n’ Smile as they play the music for you. It’s free, fun and yummy drinks and food are available as well, so if you’re in the area tonight, be sure to stop by and check it out.
If you’re doing some spring skiing and find yourself up at Sugarloaf, be sure to check out local country-rock duo Pitch Black Ribbons at The Rack tonight. The brothers will be bringing their toe-tapping tunes to the stage starting right around 7 o’clock.
Portland psychedelic folk-rocker Dominic Lavoie and a couple of his friends (ahem, Jeff Beam and Dan Capaldi) come together tonight to play some tunes as Keanu Keanu up at The Liberal Cup in Hallowell this Thursday. Starting at 7 check out this free show that’ll include both cover songs and original jams.
Sa Rah’s Serenades continue over at Easy Street Lounge this Thursday. Grab yourself a cozy seat, a delicious cocktail, and get ready to enjoy some lovely acoustic tunes courtesy of this local songstress as this free event starts up at 9pm.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH
Locally based musicians Alex Roy and Matt Libby will be performing a set of original and cover songs at Jimmy The Greeks in Old Orchard Beach as part of the restaurant’s Local Flavah Thursday. The evening gets underway at 7:30 and will feature music and select Maine brews and liquors for only $4. Tonight’s event is all-ages and free so be sure to swing through if you’re in the area this Thursday.
Singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jenny Van West will be joined by fellow musician Jon Cooper for an evening of music at Blue this Thursday. The pair will be sharing songs and stories starting at 5 o’clock.
Welcome Thursday with some stellar sounds courtesy of local artist Kafari at Portland House of Music and Events. Check out the multifarious jazz and funk sounds Kafari creates on his keyboard as this free Happy Hour event starts up at 5pm.
Join Will Bradford and other members of alt-pop-rock outfit SeepeopleS as they debut some new material, before they hit the road for another tour, tonight at Blue on Congress Street. Music starts at 7pm.
Award-winning songwriter, speaker, author, activist David Lamotte comes to Portland tonight for a show at One Longfellow Square. The Boston Globe says he “pushes the envelope with challenging lyrics and unusual tunings, but he also pays homage to folk tradition,” while BBC Radio praises his “charm, stories, humour, insightful songs, sweet voice and dazzling guitar ability.” See him for yourself in this beautiful and intimate setting as things get underway at 8pm.
Metal Church brings their gut-wrenching heavy metal to the stage of the Asylum tonight for a show that is guaranteed to help you thrash it on out this Thursday. Things get started up at 8 with an opening set from special guests Hatchet.
Michael Taylor of Rustic Overtones, Royal Hammer, The Awesome, and many more musical acts from around town will be going solo tonight for a fun set of reggae songs at Sonny’s tonight. Join Taylor for some good times and good tunes as things start up during tonight’s free show at 8:30pm.
If you’re looking for some tasty tacos and tasty experimental/psychedelic folk jams check out a free all-ages show happening at Hella Good Tacos on Washington Ave from Fur, Rick Rude and Family Planning. Tonight’s hella good show (I’m sorry, I had to) gets underway at 8pm.
Check out the melodic folk sounds of Hannah Daman and The Martelle Sisters tonight as they grace the stage of Empire for a night of music. Things get underway upstairs at 9 and promise many special guests from Ghosts of Johnson City, SeepeopleS, Johnny Cremains and more.
If you’re into the incredibly smooth sounds of say the Doobie Brothers, Toto, Michael McDonald, Steely Dan and Christopher Cross then you might want to check it and see tonight’s show at Portland House of Music and Events terrifically titled Yacht Blooded. Cruise the high seas of smooth tunes starting at 9 o’clock tonight.
Local pop-rockers, Kilcollins are back on the stage of RiRa tonight as they get the party started around 9 with their party mix of original material and awesome cover tunes. Tonight’s show is absolutely free so swing through if you’re Thursdaying in the Old Port!
Get down on it this Thursday with some explosive, high-energy funk, jazz, soul and R&B at Port City Music Hall as The Nth Power returns to Portland for a night of serious soulful fun. Things get bumping right around 9 with an opening set from Portland trip-hop, jazz, funk, soul and electronica act Jaw Gems, so swing through and check things out if you’re downtown this evening.
Bust out some sweet dance moves and your favorite hula hoop and get ready to mellow your mind at Gritty’s in the Old Port with the one and only Band Beyond Description. Far more than just your typical Grateful Dead cover band, these fellas will jam out accordingly on everything from the Allman Brothers, Phish, The Band and much more. Anticipate good times, good tunes, and good peeps starting at 9.
Vinyl Tap brings their mix of danceable covers from such notable acts as Huey Lewis, The Beatles, Charlie Daniels, Elton John, The Band and a ton more to Brian Boru in the Old Port tonight. There’s never a cover charge and plenty of beer, so check it out starting at 9:30.
