Holy flip, flappin’ Hot Pockets, I am absolutely ready for this week to cut it out already! At least I can take solace in the fact that it’s Thursday and Thursdays ‘round these parts rarely disappoint so I guess it’s time to suck it up and get on out there this evening. Here we go tons of tunes to check out in various places including CJ Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band at The Saco Theatre, Double Entendre at The Gin Mill, The Midnight Riders at The Liberal Cup, Adam Frederick Trio at Blue, The Aquanauts at Amigos, Rippleton Cross at Andy’s, Seth Warner Trio at Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza, Studio Two at The Landing at Pine Point, and more!


Acoustic Americana act Double Entendre will be hosting an open bluegrass jam at The Gin Mill in Augusta this evening. Join in on the musical revelry as things get underway at 7:30pm.


Grammy-nominated, world-renowned recording artist, accordion maestro and “crown prince of zydeco” CJ Chenier returns to Maine this evening for a show with his Red Hot Louisiana Band at The Saco River Theatre. Tonight’s performance starts up at 7:30pm.


Local acoustic act Uke n’ Smile is back at the Local Buzz tonight for another free and all ages open mic event. All artists, genres, musical capabilities and ages are welcome to join in on the creative fun as this gathering gets started at 7:30.


The Midnight Riders bring some soul, funk, Americana, roots, blues, and rock n’ roll sounds to The Liberal Cup. Join these fun fellas for some musical merriment as things get underway at 7.


Rippin’ rock n’ roll band Riot Act goes quiet tonight for an acoustic set out on the deck of The Porthole. This free party starts up at 6 o’clock.

Blue welcomes the Adam Frederick Trio to the stage this Thursday evening. This talented threesome features Frederick on bass, Emmett Harrity on keys and Chris Sweet on percussion for a study of abstraction, mythology, and the interpretation of symbols in 12 movements by Frederick . It also happens to be Adam’s birthday so stop on by beginning at 6 o’clock, enjoy some tunes, and wish him well!

The Shakes, a 7-piece funk, rock and reggae collective from Hallowell that features some of the Maine music scene’s most fun and funky players, will be performing live out on the deck of the Portland Lobster Company tonight. This free, all ages show starts up right around 6:30pm.

Summer isn’t over which means you can still shake it to some sultry salsa tunes with a bit of a punk edge as Slab’s Summer Music Series continues tonight with local salsacore act El Malo. This free and all ages party starts up on the patio right around 7pm.

Local folk-rock cover act Rippleton Cross will be at Andy’s Old Port Pub. Beginning at 7 the duo will be performing acoustic renditions of songs by such artists as Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Cat Stevens and many, many more. This event is free so make some plans to check it out if you’re in the area this evening.

Blue welcomes back Portland-based contemporary bluegrass band Cumberland Crossing for an evening of bustling bluegrass music. Tonight’s free show gets kickin’ around 8 and will feature a jam session open to any and all musicians who would like to participate.

Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist Marco Benevento brings his experimental rock n’ roll back to Portland this evening for a show at One Longfellow Square. Benevento’s sounds crosses between experimental jazz and catchy indie rock and his live show definitely should not be missed! Seriously, I think I had one of the best Monday nights ever the last time he rolled into town. This time around he’ll be joined by opener Carinae, who’ll get things underway way with a set of their original psych-rock starting at 8 o’clock.

Tons of fun to be had out on the Amigos patio tonight as The Aquanauts bring their surf rock sounds to life during a free show that’ll start up at 9pm.

Jam out this evening with A Band Beyond Description at Gritty’s in the Old Port. Get your free Grateful Dead freak out on starting at 9.

Ben Kilcollins & The Vargas Twins are back at RiRa tonight for some sweet, acoustic sounds. You know Ben from his time spent fronting local pop-rock act, Kilcollins, but this evening he teams up with the talented Vargas Twins for some fun cover tunes and original songs starting right around 9.

Acoustic rock, blues, and jazz band, The Paul Houston Project will be bringing the party to the Oasis patio tonight. Things get underway at 9pm during this free show.

An awesome, high-energy show filled with lots of punk rock (and roll) will be happening upstairs at Empire tonight as Battalion Of Saints, Opposition Rising, Nobodys, and The Cryptics come together for some fun. Tunes get cranking right around 9:30pm.


Boston-based Beatles tribute band, Studio Two, takes you back to a time when the world first met the Fab Four and fell in love with a group of mop-haired lads from Liverpool. Studio Two plays a plethora of Beatles favorites from their early years during a high-energy show, which features the four fellas decked out in full 60’s garb. Studio Two is a must for any George, Paul, John and Ringo fans so be sure to catch their set this evening at The Landing at Pine Point. Tonight’s performance gets underway at 7pm.


Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza welcomes back local act the Seth Warner Trio, which features multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Seth Warner taking lead on songs of blues, country, folk, re-imagined jazz and songbook standards. Don’t miss out on the fun as this free, all-ages show gets start up right around 7 o’clock.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am.
