Don’t miss Rap Night at the Asylum


Sweet, wonderful, Wednesday! What is up!? I am overjoyed to see you once again as your arrival marks the half way point to the freakin’ weekend! If you’re all just as happy as myself to have made it this far, then get out on the town to celebrate this joyous occasion at such shows as Journey & The Doobie Brothers at Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion, Isaiah Bennett at The Porthole, Rodrigo y Gabriela at the State Theatre, The Low Anthem & River Whyless at Port City Music Hall, Battery Steele, Gant & Spillers at Flask Lounge, Purse, Leveret, Tall Horse & Standby in the Asylum basement, and more. Here we go!


A big night of classic hits happening up in Bangor tonight as Journey and The Doobie Brothers join forces on stage of Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion. Special guest Dave Mason will kick off this night of classic rock and roll as music starts right around 6 o’clock.


Sylvain’s Acadian Aces will be performing some Music in the Park this evening. Beginning at 5:30 these talented gents will be serving up some authentic Cajun tunes for you to dance around to outside at Shevenell Park in Biddeford.


If you’re hanging in Gray tonight stop on by Cole Farms for this week’s Open Mic with local musician Dave Jacquet. It’s a free event, there’s tasty food and delicious drinks, and guaranteed to be a whole lot of fun, so check it out as things get started up at 7.


The Working Dead are back to bring the good vibes to the patio of Portland House of Music and Events this evening. This trio of talented, local musicians will be serving up some Happy Hour jams during a free show that starts at 4pm. Check out the act’s fun covers of the Grateful Dead out on the patio.

The Porthole welcomes back local singer-songwriter Isaiah Bennett to their outdoor stage for some very fun acoustic pop and funk songs. Things get started at 6 so stop through and check it out if you’re kickin’ around downtown tonight!

Singer, songwriter, guit-fiddler and all around good dude, Eric Bettencourt joins some pals for some songs out on the Portland Lobster Company deck. This free show is guaranteed to be a good time so swing through and check things out as musical merriment commences at 6:30pm.

Musical duo Rodrigo y Gabriela, who specialize in playing fast, rhythmic acoustic guitars, will be performing live at the State Theatre in Portland. Pop-rock artist Ryan Sheridan will start things off with an opening set beginning at 8pm.

Providence folk and blues trio The Low Anthem will be taking to the stage of Port City Music Hall this evening. Baroque folk act River Whyless will get things started as this 18+ show gets underway at 8.

Check out yet another installment of Blue’s Irish Concert Series tonight with a featured performance by fiddler Frankie Gavin of De Dannan. This ticketed show is almost sold out so scoop up your tickets before things get underway right around 7:30pm.

Take in some quality acoustic roots tunes with David Beam and the Custom House Gang at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in Portland this Wednesday. This lively, local bunch will be playing some music for your midweek wind-down starting at 8pm.

Get the party started tonight at Bull Feeney’s with Maine musician Dave Rowe who’ll be playing some folk-infused drinking tunes during tonight’s free shindig. Let the good times roll as things get underway right around 8 o’clock.

Check out an awesome (and FREE!) punk rock show that’ll be shaking the foundation of Flask Lounge tonight as they welcome Battery Steele, Gant and Spillers to the stage for a night of debauchery and fun. Tonight’s 21+ party will get crankin’ right around 8 o’clock so be sure to swing through and check it out if you’re in the area tonight.

Local folk-pop act the Dapper Gents Duo will be bringing some good times and good tunes back to RiRa tonight for their weekly, free show that’ll get started up at 9.

A pretty sweet rock and roll show will be happening downstairs at the Asylum tonight. Join Purse, Leveret, Tall Horse and Standby as they bring the good times to the basement beginning at 9.

As you may or may not know the Asylum will be closing at the end of the month to do some serious renovations to their venue, which makes this evening’s Rap Night with hosts Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra your last to check out for a hot minute. Tonight’s hip-hop showcase also marks seven years that these talented cats have been shining a light on the local rap scene each and every Wednesday night. Don’t miss your chance to see some great performances on stage at the Asylum before remodeling starts. Grab a crew and swing through as things start up at 9 o’clock.


Local act JD Gilbert & The Night Train will be bringing some country tunes to Easy Day in South Portland tonight for a free party that’ll get rockin’ and rollin’ right around 7pm.


Pete Witham returns to The Frog and Turtle for some Americana and rockabilly music this Wednesday. Pete will be joined by a rotating cast of characters as they bring the good times and good tunes to the stage for this free show, which’ll start up around 7:30pm.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
