Folk-rock duo Rippleton Cross will be back at Cole Farms this Wednesday to host another free open mic event. The pair will be performing some songs as well as encouraging other musicians to get up on the mic and have some fun. This all-ages gathering will get underway at 7pm.

I really don’t like to tell you guys what to do whenever I write the ol’ Newz by The Nunz, instead I like to present a line-up of stellar shows in the hopes that something will strike your fancy and you’ll get out there to support some great, live, and often local, music. Well, I’m breaking the rules as I urge you to make some plans to head over to Portland House of Music and Events to check out a killer bill of power-pop, rock and punk acts tonight not just because all of the bands are awesome, but also because it marks the first time in over three years that Portland’s own Kurt Baker plays a show in his hometown. Kurt is bringing his band from Spain, aptly titled the Kurt Baker Combo, in support of their new record “In Orbit”, which is released on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records label, to kick-off their US tour here in Maine tonight. Kurt has always gone by the famous saying of “Have a Good Time All the Time” and tonight will be no different as he is joined by Seacoast rock n’ rollers, The Connection, Portland’s own piano-driven rock act, Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, and local pop-punk outfit, Borderlines. Of note is that Borderlines features 2 out of the other 3 members of The Leftovers – the act in which KB was in prior to taking off with his solo efforts – so who knows what could happen! I guarantee a blast and a half will be had by all so I hope to see you there, exchange some high-fives, and party ‘til we die as music starts up at 8 o’clock!
Rock and rollers Kicking Icarus are playing a free show at Flask Lounge. The band draws their influences from such acts as Yes, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, The Tragically Hip, and more. You can check ‘em out as things get swinging right around 9 tonight.
The fellas of the Dapper Gents Duo will be helping you properly get your folk-pop on this Wednesday as they play another free show at RiRa. Join this pair of talented Gents as they start playing some fun songs right around 9.
California-based reggae, ska, pop, punk, and surf-influenced rock n’ rollers, The Expendables, will be bringing their tunes tailor-made for good times to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. It might not feel like spring outside, but it’ll certainly sound like it inside PCMH as this all ages show kicks off at 9 with opening sets by RDGLDGRN and Tribal Theory.
Rap Night returns tonight at its new home at Aura! To celebrate they’ve booked on helluva night featuring some stellar stars of the local hip-hop scene including Ock Cousteau, Ill by Instinct, Ben Shorr, Peace Out Pat, and God.Damn.Chan. Of course there’ll be early and late open mic cyphers hosted by Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra. Doors open at 9 and God.Damn.Chan. will be rocking a special beat/DJ set on the early side (and then helping El Shupacabra keep the music going throughout the evening), and the first open mic cypher will kick off right around 10.
The Clash of the Titans returns tonight as its pit the solo efforts of founding fathers of prog/art-rock band Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, against one another during this week’s battle of the cover bands. The music starts upstairs at Empire right around 9:30pm.
More midweek fun will be happening at Crooners & Cocktails tonight as Hello Clarice brings some fun tunes to your Wednesday. Hello Clarice features the vocal stylings of Clarence “Jim” Roberts of Hello Newman and the musical mastery of pianist Mike Maurice as they play everything from Frank Sinatra to Billy Ocean. The pair prepares to perform beginning at 9:30pm.
Pete Witham returns to The Frog and Turtle for some more fun Americana and rockabilly music this Wednesday. Pete will be joined by a rotating cast of characters as they bring the good times and tunes to the stage during this free show, that’ll start up at 7:30pm.
Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am.
