Ray’s Occult, Spillers, Gant & Stokin The Neighbors play a free show at Flask Lounge tonight


I will admit that I have been dragging some serious tail this week and therefore I’m pretty elated by the fact that it’s already Wednesday. This makes me a very happy Nunz because it means that we are all one day closer to pulling up those weekend Party Pants and doing it to it. Until then, here are the haps for your Hump Day, including shows such as Starcrossed Losers at Frontier, GoldenOak at Shevenell Park, Alex Roy at The Brunswick, Eric Bettencourt at Portland Lobster Company, The Up and Ups at Local Sprouts, Heather Masse with Jed Willson at St. Lawrence Arts, The Maine Dead Project at Portland House of Music, The Awesome at Royal River Park and more.


Downtown Biddeford’s Music in the Park summer series continues this evening at Shevenell Park as Maine indie folk act GoldenOak will be performing a free all-ages show starting up at 5:30pm.


JimmyJo & the Jumbol’Ayuhs will bringing some fun Cajun and Zydeco tunes to the Brunswick Mall tonight as part of the Music on the Mall summer concert series. Grab some pals and have some fun as this free all-ages show starts at 6pm.

Local act Starcrossed Losers will be performing at Frontier tonight as part of the venues Live in the Lounge concert series. Starcrossed Losers is the music of Kyle Morgan, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist working with a rotating cast of bandmates from Maine to Pennsylvania. Tonight’s performance will range in style from stripped-down acoustic balladry to old-school rock n’ roll, gritty gypsy-blues and distorted proto-punk. This free show starts up at 7:30pm.


Local guitarist, singer and songwriter Dave Jacquet will be hosting another free Open Mic up at Cole Farms in Gray this Wednesday. Starting at 7 all musicians are welcome to join in on the fun and jam out on stage with Dave and a few of his friends, so be sure to grab your instrument of choice and let the creative energy flow!


Sparks The Rescue front man Alex Roy goes solo and acoustic for another free show out on The Brunswick patio this evening. Beginning at 7 swing through and check out some of Roy’s pop-rock jams as he plays right on through 11 o’clock.


The Working Dead are back to bring the good vibes to Portland House of Music and Events this evening. This trio of talented, local musicians will be serving up some Happy Hour jams during a free show that starts at 4. Check out the act’s fun covers of the Grateful Dead out on the patio.

The Porthole welcomes back local singer-songwriter Isaiah Bennett for a set of Happy Hour songs this evening. Starting at 6 check out Isaiah’s distinctive mix of acoustic pop and funk during this free and fun event, and make sure you scoop up a copy of his new record, Vessels, while you’re at it!

In case you’ve been hiding out under a rock (which honestly, at times, I can’t blame you) then you’re well aware that Eric Bettencourt is back in town for the summer. This evening he joins a few pals for some rootsy rock and roll fun out on the deck of the Portland Lobster Company for his regular Wednesday night gig. I anticipate lots of good times and good jams as this free show starts up at 6:30pm.

Lots and lots of fun, original music to check out for free this Wednesday evening over at Local Sprouts as The Up and Ups bring some melodic pop-rock to the stage for a show that’ll get swinging right around 7pm.

New York singer-songwriter Heather Masse returns to Maine tonight for a performance at St. Lawrence Arts. Trained at the New England Conservatory of Music as a jazz singer, she is steeped in the jazz tradition, which informs her distinct approach to singing folk, pop and bluegrass. Masse is also a member of the Billboard-charting folk group, The Wailin’ Jennys, and she has performed at hundreds of venues across the world. She has been a frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s A Prairie Home Companion, both as a solo performer and as a member of The Jennys. Check out her solo performance as music begins with an opening set from Jed Willson at 7 o’clock.

Check out yet another installment of Blue’s Irish Concert Series tonight with a featured performance from The Stowes. Things get underway right around 7:30pm.

Local folk musician Dave Rowe will be playing another free show over at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port tonight. Join Rowe for some rollicking good times as the music starts at up at 8 o’clock.

 MJ’s Wine Bar Ladies in Red music series rolls on tonight as vocalist Susanne Gerry is joined once again by Mike Maurice on keys for an evening of lounge-style tunes. Settle in and enjoy a variety of jazz, soul, pop and R&B songs as tonight’s free shindig gets started up right around 8 o’clock.

Tap your toes to some some down-home, acoustic roots tunes at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in downtown Portland as local act David Beam and The Custom House Gang return to play a free show starting at 8.

Local cover act The Depths will be bringing the party to the Oasis patio tonight . The band will be playing all kinds of songs from all kinds of genres during this free show, which starts up at 9 o’clock.

Catch some great tunes tonight at Portland House of Music as musicians Doug Emery, Justin Maxwell, Joshua M. Robbins, Christopher Sweet, Tim Sullivan and Ryan Benoit come together on stage once again as The Maine Dead Project as part of the band’s summer residency. These talented artists will be performing songs from the Grateful Dead and more as things get underway at 9pm.

Folk-pop-rock act the Dapper Gents Duo return to RiRa for some good times and good tunes tonight. This free party gets started at 9 o’clock.


Boston-based Beatles tribute band, Studio Two, will be taking you back to the early 60’s, a time when The Fab Four were truly taking the world by storm, as these talented gents play a free show at Mill Creek Park.  Join these fab fellas for some serious nostalgic fun as the music starts at 6:30pm.


The Frog and Turtle welcomes back local musician Tom Douglas to the stage for an evening of classic covers and original songs. Join Tom as this free all-ages acoustic show starts up at 7:30pm.


Bust out your brightest neon accessories get ready to party like it’s 1985 as The Awesome performs all of your favorite 80s jams during a free all ages show out at Royal River Park in Yarmouth this Wednesday evening. You’ll definitely bust a move as this cover acts plays songs from Hall and Oates, Michael Jackson, Cyndi Lauper, Duran Duran, INXS, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, Human League, Wham, Tears for Fears, Whitney Houston and more as this outdoor concert starts up at 6 o’clock.

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
