Sometimes I feel as if I sound like a broken record on Fridays, but truthfully I did not think I was going to make it this week. It was a long, arduous journey to finally make it to the freakin’ weekend and I’m throwing in the towel on this week, hiking up my finest pair of Party Pants, and getting down on it like it ain’t nobody’s business! There’s a ton of great stuff to check out so get ready to make some magic happen at such shows as The Outsiders at Banded Horn Brewery, Dave Jacquet at The Daniel Inn Coast Bar + Bistro, Seth Warner at Elements, Revibe at Chummies, Dr. Fatfinger at The Cage, Iron Dynamite at GFB Scottish Pub, Aztec Two-Step at One Longfellow Square, Saviours of Soul at Portland House of Music, Minibeast, Haru Bangs, Crystal Canyon & Cushing at SPACE Gallery, Jerks of Grass at Salvage BBQ, Assembly of Dust & Todo Bien at Port City Music Hall, Welterweight at Blue, Scarab: The Journey Experience at Mixers, and much, much more.
Local rockabilly band The Outsiders will be playing a free show at Banded Horn Brewery in Biddeford tonight. Get ready to enjoy some fine local brews and as well as some serious party tunes as tonight’s shindig gets shaking right around 8 o’clock.
Local instrumentalist Seth Warner and a few of his musically inclined pals will be returning to Elements in Biddeford tonight for a free show filled with country, blues, folk, re-imagined jazz and songbook standards. This all- ages performance will begin at 8 o’clock.
Maine singer, songwriter, and guitarist Dave Jacquet brings back some acoustic Americana, roots-rock and folk tunes to The Daniel Inn Coast Bar + Bistro. Join Jacquet starting at 7 during this free, fun all-ages show.
Burlington jam band Revibe returns to Maine for a show at Chummies. Revibe combines a wide range of musical influences and genres including jam, funk, psychedelic rock and electronica to create tight grooves that are bound to keep you moving. Tonight’s shindig gets shaking right around 9.
Folk-rock cover act Rippleton Cross will be performing an acoustic stet at the School Street Pub this evening. Beginning at 8:30 the duo will be performing songs from such artists as Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, The Who, Cat Stevens and many more.
Bluegrass act Back Woods Road returns to Guthries this Friday with an energetic set of acoustic tunes featuring the band’s tight harmonies, driving lead solos, and crowd-pleasing compositions. This free and all ages event begins at 8pm.
If you’re up in Lewiston tonight make some plans to swing on by The Cage as local act Doctor Fatfinger will be busting out some great cover tunes for you to shake your groove thing to starting at 8 o’clock.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH
Local cover band Iron Dynamite with be jamming out all of rock’s classics down at the GFB Scottish Pub tonight. With hits by bands like Led Zeppelin, Stone Temple Pilots, Ozzy, Foreigner, Alice in Chains, Metallica, and many more you’re bound to have a ton of fun as this free show starts up at 8.
The Brunswick in OOB is geared up for another fun Friday featuring dance-pop cover act Tickle. Things get shaking at 8:30 with a super party mix of some of the best music from today as well as some classic retro funk that’s guaranteed to get you out on the dance floor.
Blues-infused, country and folk artist Shanna Underwood will be hosting another Songwriters in the Round event at Blue this evening. Beginning at 6 Shanna will be joined by two other local singer-songwriters to play some original tunes, share stories about their songs, and improvise with one another on stage. This show is guaranteed to be a great way to kick-start your weekend so be sure to check it out.
The Portland School of Hip-Hop, a local non-profit organization, is throwing a hip-hop and punk rock party at Geno’s tonight to help raise funds for Mason, a young community boy who requires a life-changing and very expensive surgery to help him gain the ability to walk. Tonight’s event will feature performances from BBoys and BGirls, an all-inclusive potluck dinner, face painting, arts and crafts, raffle prizes and sets from GVTZ, Smokeye, Cody Pope, Hogan’s Alley, Ben Shorr and more. Tonight’s fundraiser starts at 6:30pm and is all ages with a suggested donation of $12 at the door.
Aztec Two-Step returns to the stage of One Longfellow Square tonight to celebrate their 45th anniversary. This evening they’ll be performing the music of The Everly Brothers and Simon & Garfunkel as well as some of their own beloved originals. The duo, which has been dazzling audiences with inspiring harmonies and well-played guitar, will fill the venue with beautiful music starting right around 8 tonight.
Dublin, Ireland, the birthplace of Oscar Wilde and Bram Stoker, famous for Guinness, U2, and, yes, soul music. In 1991 a movie titled “The Commitments” depicted the rise and fall of a Dublin soul cover band and although their success seemed unlikely, their talent couldn’t be denied, and neither could the music they honored. Saviours of Soul is a tribute to this movie and its music featuring musicians from local acts such as the Bob Charest Band, J. Biddy, Loki, and Sly Chi. This band of Maine musicians will be performing hits from the hits from the glory days of soul music including tunes from the likes of Aretha Franklin, Sam and Dave, Wilson Pickett, and others. Tonight’s soul shakedown gets start at Portland House of Music and Events at 8pm.
MJ’s Wine Bar welcomes back Portland piano man Mike Maurice for another Friday night filled with some funk, jazz, and soul sounds. Enjoy some delicious vino and delightful tunes as this free show starts up at 8pm.
Minibeast, the latest musical outlet of Peter Prescott of Mission of Burma and Volcano Suns, makes their Portland debut alongside a stellar mix of local heavy hitters tonight over at SPACE Gallery. Minibeast is a genre-bending, largely instrumental, soundscape-experience that mixes elements of surf, psych, punk, easy-listening, 60’s children’s music, and soundtrack music together. Things will start up during this all-ages show at 8 with some head-trippin’ rhythms courtesy of Haru Bangs, the pop-injected shoegaze tidal-wave of Crystal Canyon, and the noisy post-punk of Cushing.
Jam out with NY’s Assembly of Dust as they return to Port City Music Hall in Portland this evening to light up the stage with their folk rock that’s inspired by such bands at The Grateful Dead, The Band, Traffic and CSNY. The party starts right around 9 with an opening set from roots-rock act Todo Bien.
Together with the tasty acoustic stylings of Portland band Happy Folk, and the soulful ruckus of musical outfit New Noise, local act Sassquatch plans on tearin’ the roof off the Empire with their wicked fun brand of jam-rock. Things get ultra-groovy upstairs starting at 9:30 tonight.
The dudes in Kilcollins will be doing it to it over at Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port tonight. Starting at 9:30 the band plans on rockin’ you with all sorts of tunes that you know in love with a handful of catchy original jams for good measure. It’s free, fun and guaranteed to be a good time, so check it out if you’re downtown this evening.
Check out the smart, pop-infused Americana and folk sounds of local act Welterweight at Blue this evening. The band will be coming together on stage in this unique and intimate venue right around 10pm so make some plans to stop in and check them out.
Seacoast band Red Sky Mary will be bringing some high-energy rock and roll to The Kerrymen Pub. Get ready to have some serious fun as these fellas blast off into the rock and roll stratosphere with a bunch of fun covers and catchy originals during a free show that gets underway at 8.
Get heavy tonight at the American Legion Hall Post 202 in Topsham as hard rockers Break The Skin, Trial By Stone, Dirty Rotten Winter and Second Sight join forces to bring the thunder, rattle some bones, and melt some faces beginning at 8 o’clock.
Blue Prairie brings some country and western to Lenny’s at Hawkes Plaza this evening. Enjoy some toe-tapping tunes as things start up at 7pm.
Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am.
