The Maine Dead Project kicks off their Summer Series at Portland House of Music tonight

Sending out some virtual high fives to y’all as we hurdle the hump and take on another Wednesday. If you’re looking to treat yourself to some live, local music this evening, here are some fine establishments to do just that! Great tunes to take in including The Joint Chiefs at Portland Lobster Company, Choro Louco at Frontier, Pete Witham at The Frog and Turtle, Rap Night at Asylum, The Dapper Gents Duo at RiRa and more. 

BRUNSWICK

Check out some great tunes from Portland’s only Brazilian choro ensemble, Choro Louco as they play a free show Live in the Lounge at Frontier tonight. Choro Louco features local musicians Carl Dimow, Nicole Rabata, Joel Eckhaus, Eric LaPerna, and David Newsmam. This evening’s performance gets underway at 8pm.

GRAY

If you’re hanging around Gray on this Hump Day evening, be sure to stop through Cole Farms for this week’s Open Mic hosted by local musician Dave Jacquet. It’s free and all ages, there’s tasty food and boozy drinks, and tons of fun to be had, so check it out as things get started up at 7.

PORTLAND

Attention all Dead Heads and purveyors of all things jam, you’ve got two chances to get your noodle on down at Portland House of Music and Events this Wednesday. The first being Happy Hour with The Working Dead as they play a free show this evening. Beginning at 4:30 this talented trio will be playing all your favorite Grateful Dead tunes as well as various other covers from some of the most beloved jam bands around, so make some plans to check it out.

The Woodshed Mystics will be performing a free show live in Congress Square Park this evening. Beginning at 6 you can check out the band’s upbeat roots and acoustic tunes that span such genres as folk, soft rock and adult alternative. Anticipate lots of harmonies, a hint of reggae, some calypso and maybe even a bit of bluegrass during this fun, outdoor shindig.

Take in some patio fun happening at the Portland Lobster Company in the Old Port as local rockers and rollers The Joint Chiefs perform live this Wednesday evening. Starting at 6:30 these fellas will get the good times and good tunes rollin’ with a set of high-energy and big fun songs.

Blue’s Irish Concert Series continues with a featured performance from local musical act Dance Panther. Their starts at 7:30 and will be followed by another Wednesday evening Irish Session open to any and all musicians looking to get up on stage and jam.

Your second chance to get mellow and catch some great tunes and vibes happens right around 8 o’clock at Portland House of Music as Doug Emery, Justin Maxwell, Joshua M. Robbins, Christopher Sweet, Tim Sullivan and Ryan Benoit of The Maine Dead Project kick off their summer residency. These talented musicians will be bringing the sounds of the Grateful Dead and more as things get underway at 8pm.

Bull Feeney’s in the Old Port welcomes back the Squid Jiggers for some finely crafted folk tunes that are guaranteed to drum up some good times. Join this pair of talented gents as they get tonight’s free show started at 8 o’clock.

Tap your toes to some some down-home, acoustic roots tunes at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in downtown Portland as local act David Beam and The Custom House Gang return to play a free show starting at 8.

Folk-pop rockers the Dapper Gents Duo will be bringing some tunes to the stage of RiRa tonight for another free, 21+ show that starts up at 9 o’clock.

Rap Night returns to the Asylum in Portland this Wednesday to highlight some of the best local hip-hop around. Every Wednesday Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra team up to host this hip-hop heavy party that features some of the dopest emcees around. Things get fresh starting at 9, so head downtown and check it out.

WESTBROOK

Pete Witham returns to The Frog and Turtle for some fun Americana and rockabilly music this Wednesday. Pete will be joined by a rotating cast of characters as they bring the good times and good tunes to the stage for this free show, which’ll start at 7:30pm.

Holly Nunan

Holly “The Nunz” Nunan is a musician from Portland, Maine with an unabashed love for the city as well as its thriving Maine music scene. This is her scene report.

Aside from here on this blog, she can be found around town taking in local shows, performing with any variety of musical acts (basically anyone who will give her a microphone and a tambourine), and talking up local music on WCSH 6 on Friday mornings around 6:20am. She is also the Promotions Director for WFNK, WTHT and WHXR in Portland as well as an On Air Personality at 107.5 Frank FM.
