I have had Friday on my mind since Sunday evening, so I am overwhelmingly glad to welcome another weekend. If you aren’t in Portland tonight and find yourself up near the Lewiston/Auburn area, you should check out the talented Denny Breau as he brings his rhythmically enticing guitar style to life over at Gritty’s in Auburn. Denny is the younger brother of acclaimed guitarist Lenny Breau, who was also from Maine. If you’ve never heard of Lenny Breau and play guitar, I’d highly recommend checking out his stuff; it’s pretty crazy. Denny will be doing his thing beginning at 8 tonight, so if you’re around, check it out.
The Veggies are back to rock it on out during a free all ages show at the Fire House Grille in Auburn tonight. This local band will be bringing a show chock full of fun and danceable cover tunes to the stage as things get underway at 8.
If you find yourself Fridaying up in the Central Maine area get on over to The Nocturnem Draft Haus in Bangor as they present another fine evening of jazz tunes and musical merriment with local act The Bill Barnes Trio. This free 21+ shindig gets swingin’ at 8 o’clock.
Local act the Marshall Nelson Trio will be bringing their fun live show filled with funky covers of such notable acts as the Spin Doctors, Sublime, Lorde, Police, Foo Fighters, Michael Jackson, George Michael, The Beatles and even some original tunes to the stage of the Riverside Bar & Grille in Bath tonight. Join these talented gents for a Friday full of fun as this free 21+ show starts up around 9 o’clock.
Elements in Biddeford welcomes back local acoustic duo October Road for a free, all-ages set of songs this finally Friday eve. Beginning at 8pm, make some plans to stop by and check out the pair’s original Americana and folk-rock tunes.
The Daniel Coast Bar + Bistro welcomes musician Brendan Lake to their stage this evening. Brendan is a singer-songwriter and small boat adventurist who has sailed his ships and sung his songs for audiences in harbor towns on the east coast of Maine to the Florida Keys, to Europe and the Azores. You can see him tonight as this free show starts up at 7.
If you’re up in Hallowell this evening check out the dead ahead, high-energy, 4-piece dance-your-butt-off rock and roll band known as The Worthy Bones. These dudes are ready to get you dancing with an energetic set that gets underway right around 9 o’clock tonight over at the Kennebec Wharf.
Local band The Scolded Dogs will be making some noise at the Easy Street Lounge as they return with some party-rockin’ tunes. Beginning at 9:30 you can expect to hear some awesome originals as well as covers of such acts as Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg and more.
Shanna Underwood and Wanderlost will be bringing some fine Americana music to the stage of Guthries this evening. Starting at 8 Underwood joins forces with Devon Colella on cello, Drew Wyman on bass, and Greg Bjork on mandolin for some original music-making.
If you’re doing it to it in the Mechanic Falls area this Friday get ready for some rollicking rockabilly courtesy of Ragged Jack. Ragged Jack will be swinging the night away at Shooters Pub starting at 8:30.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH
Local rock and roller Riff Johnson will be playing some party-starting songs up at The Boomhouse in Old Town tonight. If you’re looking for something fun to do up that way be sure to swing in and check out tonight’s free show as things get going right around 9:30pm.
Get your Friday evening rolling along with some live, acoustic tunes from local singer-songwriter Bill Howard as he helps the Inn on Peaks Island celebrate their grand opening for the summer season with a free show that’ll begin at 4:30pm.
Local pop-rock outfit The Still is back at Portland House of Music and Events this finally Friday for another Happy Hour set that’ll get underway at 5 o’clock. Don’t miss out on your chance to enjoy some good tunes, good times, and great drink specials with some great people during this free and fun event.
Bluegrass duo Darlin’ Corey is at Blue tonight. Starting at 6, you can stop by and check out the local pair’s delightful blend of vocal harmonies, fiddle, banjo, mandolin and guitars that utilized to make some truly unique bluegrass, old timey, and folk sounds.
b.good in the Old Port will host a featured performance by musician Dan Knudsen this Friday evening beginning at 7pm. Dan is a local artist whose musical style has been described as a combination of folk and gospel, but I say it’s pretty much in a league of its own, so if you’re hanging out tonight, check out his set.
The ProfTones will be playing some great R&B, blues, jazz and rock n’ roll tunes at Andy’s Old Port Pub on Commercial Street in the Old Port this evening. The joint starts jumpin’ as tonight’s free show gets underway at 7 o’clock.
Man, oh man, I hope you’ve done some stretching, taken some gummy vitamins and ate your Wheaties because tonight’s show at Portland House of Music and Events is bound to be all kinds of awesome! This evening indie rock trio Weakened Friends will be kicking off their tour with a big ol’ party also featuring the sounds of Tigerman WOAH, The Color & Sound and Borderlines. Mammoth amounts of rockin’ and rollin’ will be happening as this 21+ show gets shaking at 8 o’clock, so be sure to check it out!
Portland, Oregon-based guitarist and songwriter, M. Ward will be bringing his indie-folk tunes to the stage of Port City Music Hall in Portland this Friday evening. Many might recognize Ward as the Him of She & Him, his dream pop duo featuring actress Zooey Deschanel. M. Ward will be joined by special guests, Nice As Fuck, which features Jenny Lewis, as things get underway at 8 o’clock tonight.
It is First Friday here in Portland so if you are Art Walking don’t miss your opportunity to take in tonight’s show from Okbari over at Blue on Congress Street. Starting at 8 the act will be performing music from the Middle East and Turkey on such unique and beautiful instruments as oud (fretless Middle Eastern lute), qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern micro-tonal zither), nay (ancient Middle Eastern reed flute), and Middle Eastern percussion.
You don’t often hear of an all ages AND free show happening at many venues on a Friday night so I’d say jump on tonight’s concert over at Asylum as they welcome the lush, six-member indie pop sounds of San Fernando Valley ensemble, Run River North to the stage. Again this FREE show starts at 8:30 with an opening set from Portland’s own terrific pop-rock act John Hughes Radio so go on and check it out!
It’s First Friday in Portland which means it’s time to bust a move down at Flask Lounge during DJ Jamie O’Sullivan’s monthly LOVE dance party. This month’s installment of LOVE features some of the best house, techno and disco music around. Properly shake your can at tonight’s free shindig as things get grooving right around 9.
Rock and roll at Geno’s tonight with some great indie rock, surf rock, alt-rock and garage rock sounds offered up by acts Jargon Party, Cool Tara, Black Hatch, Pleasure Gap and Bunny Boy as the bands begin to take the stage right around 9 o’clock.
Check out the rowdy, rock n’ roll infused sounds of five-piece alt-rock act Parsonsfield alongside the melodic folk music of Hannah Daman and The Martelle Sisters tonight as the bands take the stage of Empire for a night of tunes tonight. Things get underway upstairs at 9.
Local act Northern Groove will be gearing up to kick-off Mixers in Sabattus’ weekend-long Cinco de Mayo celebration this Friday. The band promises a little bit of something for everyone as they span genres such as blues, classic rock, contemporary, country, R&B and more. The party starts at 8:30.
Fender Bender is back at Thatcher’s in South Portland this Friday with their energetic blend of classic rock, blues, jazz, country and soul. The four-piece will take the stage around 8:30 for some musical merriment during this free show.
If you’re spending your Friday evening in Waterville, check out singer-songwriter Ron Bergeron as he plays a free show up at Silver Street Tavern. Ron will be getting things kicked into gear right around 8 with tons great covers from The Beatles, Stones, Queen, Elvis, The Boss, Tom Petty, Paul Simon and more.
The Frog and Turtle in Westbrook welcomes back local act The Groove Kings tonight as they return to bring some soul, funk and rhythm & blues to the stage. Join the fellas for some free, all-ages fun as music starts at 8:30pm.
