Phish cover act Pardon Me, Doug is ready to bring some musical merriment back to The Rack tonight as they play two sets of their renditions of Phish classics starting up at 9pm.

Local singer-songwriter Andrew Dostie will be doing his thing acoustically tonight over at Pedro O’Hara’s. Andrew will be playing some fun covers and originals as this free and all ages shindig gets started up around 7:30pm.

Guthries kicks off another fun-filled weekend with a performance from Portland’s own original act, The Coloradas, who will be performing their folk tunes that combine traditional bluegrass elements with a bit of blues for a set the gets underway right around 8 tonight.

Seacoast band Red Sky Mary will be bringing some high-energy rock and roll to the stage of The Brunswick in Old Orchard Beach this finally Friday. Get ready to have some serious fun as these fellas prepare to blast off into the rock and roll stratosphere with a bunch of fun covers and catchy originals as this free show gets crankin’ around 8:30.

PORTLAND

Get your fix of electronic improv jazz over at Blue tonight as they welcome Ear Bus to the stage to treat your earholes to some mighty fine music. Things get underway right around 6pm tonight.

Ryan Lee will be bringing some Americana sounds to Andy’s Old Port Pub this finally Friday as this free and all ages show starts up at 7pm.

Binghamton, NY band Driftwood will be performing at One Longfellow Square. The act leans alternately into folk, old-time, country, punk, and rock for a sound that is completely all their own. Tonight local folk troubadour Max Garcia Conover will start things off with a set as music begins at 8pm.

Why bust out that Dark Side of the Moon vinyl when you can actually go out and hear some Pink Floyd live courtesy of The Machine? Tonight this beloved tribute band, which has built a strong reputation for their live shows, appearing at festivals like Bonnaroo, brings their Floydian meanderings to the stage of the State Theatre for an all ages show that’ll start at 8 o’clock.

Miss Maybell & Slimpickin’s bring some old time music of the Americana, jug band, ragtime, blues, jazz and country genres to Blue tonight. Transport yourself back in time as things get swinging right around 8.

Dynamic roots/rock band based outta Boston, the Adam Ezra Group, comes back to Portland for a night high-energy musicin’ over at Port City Music Hall. This 18+ show starts up at 8 with opening sets from local soul-infused roots/rock band Chris Ross and The North as well as folk act Goldenoak.

Check out a free show down at Salvage BBQ tonight as roots rocker Travis James Humphrey and his band play a bunch of barn burners for ya beginning at 8:30.

Brooklyn-based electrified honky-tonk surf duo, Crushed Out bring their rock n’ roll dance party to Bayside Bowl tonight where the music will get underway right around 9pm.

Mathew’s will be getting a solid dose of the rock and/or roll tonight as they welcome I Suppose You Know Karate, Color Hex, Mary Jane Motorcade (which is my new favorite band name, by the way) and Labor Pains to the stage for a full night of music. Things get crankin’ right around 9 o’clock.

Portsmouth’s funk-hop outfit Harsh Armadillo will be bringing the party to the stage of Portland House of Music and Events tonight. This Seacoast area act is ready to get on down so bust out your finest pair of Party Pants and prepare to shake what you’ve got out on the dance floor as things start up at 9 with an opening set chock full of funk, rock and ska from local band Skosh.

More in the way of high-energy, high-quality RnR (rock n’ roll!) happens at Empire tonight as three tremendous acts team up to bring the thunder this evening. Get down on it with some of the best alt-rock tunes the 90s ever gave us with Hello Newman as they throw a party upstairs at Bull Feeney’s tonight. Folk-rock cover act Rippleton Cross will be performing an acoustic set at Andy’s Old Port Pub. This free, all-ages show will feature the pair performing renditions of songs by such artists as The Who, Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and many more as things get started right around 6pm.

Check out The Grassholes as they play some feel-good bluegrass tunes at Flatbread on Commercial Street tonight. Starting at 6:30, kick back, enjoy some beer, delicious food, and mighty fine tunes during this free, all-ages shindig.

Tonight Blue welcomes local act Lost Cartoons to the stage. The project consists of local indie singer-songwriters Greg Jamie (former owner of The Oak & Ax) and Vince Nez (Mousa & The Last Sip) and music will begin tonight right around 6:30pm.

The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. Local act RUIN makes its SPACE Gallery debut as they headline an evening of heavy music that’s guaranteed to bring the thunder, especially with their unique blend of thrash-influenced metal. Atlanta’s Withered, Chicago’s Immortal Bird and Portland’s own black/death metal meanderers Shabti round out tonight’s thunderous bill as things get loud, awesome and super heavy starting at 8:30pm.

Jam out this Thirsty Thursday with A Band Beyond Description at Gritty’s in the Old Port. Get your free Grateful Dead freak out on starting at 9.

The super fun fellas in local act Kilcollins will be doing it to it over at RiRa on Commercial Street this Thirsty Thursday. Starting at 9, the boys will be rockin’ you with all sorts of tunes that you know and love alongside a handful of catchy original jams for good measure. Vermont-based folk-Americana act The DuPont Brothers return to fill Blue with all kinds of lovely sounds as they perform another Thursday night show starting up at 9 o’clock.

The Scolded Dogs return to Brian Boru to do a little partying during another free show tonight. Starting at 9:30 you can expect to hear some awesome originals as well as cover tunes from such acts as Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg, and many more.

Big World, a band from Portland which focuses on taking compositions from jazz and other musical genres to explore the musical form through improvisation. Tonight they’re at Blue performing both original compositions and covers starting at 8 o’clock.

It has been said by more than a few listeners that metal band, The Body is the most brutal band on the planet. With ravishing grimness and impenetrable walls of noise, the duo creates music that goes beyond what is normally considered harsh and violent for anyone brave enough to take the plunge. Tonight they’ll be joined by the pitch-black spectral sounds of Muslin, the spine-tingling and soul-crushing noise-ballads of Lingua Ignota, and the shape-shifting doom of ‘Cuse Me for an 18+ show that starts at 8pm at SPACE Gallery.

Portland’s premiere string act the Amarantos Quartet plays a special show this evening at The Bearded Lady’s Jewel Box. Classically trained, each member of the quartet has also performed extensively with musicians from a wide variety of styles such as rock, pop, folk, world, and more. This group of supremely talented string players will begin playing right around 8pm tonight.

Empire’s Three for 3 music series continues tonight with the haunting sounds of love and loss from the American South courtesy of the Ghosts of Johnson City, as well as the stripped-down acoustic balladry to old-school rock n’ roll, gritty gypsy-blues and distorted proto-punk of Starcrossed Losers, and the punk and jazz-tinged rock and roll sounds of one-man-band RSO. Things get swinging upstairs right around 9 o’clock.

Take in some roots rock tunes this finally Friday as local musician Travis James Humphrey returns to the Dogfish Bar & Grille for a free Happy Hour set that’ll start up right around 5 o’clock.

Local folk songsmiths Caroline Cotter and George Woods will be performing a fun and intimate set of acoustic tunes at Blue this evening. Things get underway at 6pm.

Built on the Lynyrd Skynyrd Southern rock template, complete with country and blues overtones, Whiskey Myers, will be burning things up on stage at Port City Music Hall tonight. Nashville country-rockers The Wans will open things up with a set slated to start at 8 o’clock.

If you’re downtown this evening doing the First Friday thing, be sure to take in tonight’s performance by Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble at Blue on Congress Street. Starting at 8 the act will be performing music from the Middle East and Turkey on such unique and beautiful instruments as oud (fretless Middle Eastern lute), qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern micro-tonal zither), nay (ancient Middle Eastern reed flute), and Middle Eastern percussion.

Burlington, VT’s punk powerhouse Rough Francis returns to Portland tonight. ALASH are masters of Tuvan throat singing (xöömei), a remarkable technique for singing multiple pitches at the same time. Cambridge alternative folk-rock act The Ballroom Thieves return to Maine for a show at Port City Music Hall tonight. Known to many as the drummer for Eskimeaux, Florist, and Bellows, and a frequent collaborator of Girlpool, Porches, Frankie Cosmos, and others, Walworth is a pillar of Brooklyn art collective The Epoch. Tonight Slant will be joined by local atmospheric act, Ada, and psych-folk act, The Veazies, as this 18+ show starts at 8:30pm.

Portland House of Music and Events will be jumping tonight as they welcome PitchBlak Brass Band to the stage. PitchBlak utilizes epic sounds of tubas, trombones, saxophones and other typically non-hip hop instruments in the spirit of The Roots to deliver an energy that samples, loops and breakbeats can’t always capture. Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, and producer Eric Krasno and his band return to the stage of Portland House of Music and Events tonight. Krasno is also a founding member of Soulive and Lettuce and has worked with many Portland players as well. Psychedelic southern rock and blues outfit the Marcus King Band will open tonight’s show with a set starting up at 8 o’clock.

Electronic music comes in all sounds, colors, and textures, but drummer RJ Miller exploits the ambient side with chilled themes and moody soundscapes that you can check out tonight as he brings his latest musical endeavor, Jesus Cactus, to the stage of Blue. Miller expertly juxtaposes his drum kit with piano, keyboards, and analog synthesizers through infectious melodies that move and groove as things begin right around 8 o’ clock tonight.

The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. Lee is an award-winning English guitarist known for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique.
