Blue welcomes Qi Hammer to the stage this Tuesday. Qi Hammer combines ethereal synthesizing, field recordings, noise, and free jazz drums into long-form meditative pieces that are truly unique. Check ‘em out as things get underway at 6pm.

Check out Lush Music Night featuring sounds from producers and DJs Doradoe and Trele as well as experimental alt-rock act Work In Progress at Portland House of Music and Events. This all ages show is guaranteed to be a terrific way to spend a Tuesday so make some plans to stop through as things get underway at 7pm.

Take in some Americana tunes this Tuesday with singer-songwriter Matt Nasi as he prepares to play a free and all-ages show at Andy’s tonight beginning at 7pm.

Tonight Merrill Auditorium welcomes Rocktopia, a performance celebrating the fusion of classical music with classic rock. This act delivers one-of-a-kind musical arrangements featuring the works of classical composers, rock bands and artists including Mozart, Journey, Handel, U2, Tchaikovsky, Heart, Beethoven, Styx, Foreigner, Rachmaninoff, Pink Floyd, Copland, The Who and more. Tonight’s event gets underway at 7:30.

Port City Music Hall and SPACE Gallery co-present tonight’s show at PCMH with singer-songwriter Waxahatchee, who brings her powerful lo-fi acoustic tracks to life alongside openers Kevin Morby and Mary Lattimore as this 18+ show starts up at 8pm.

Electronic music comes in all sounds, colors, and textures, but drummer RJ Miller exploits the ambient side with chilled themes and moody soundscapes that you can see performed live tonight at Blue. Miller’s latest musical endeavor, Jesus Cactus, hits right around 8 o’ clock tonight.

Tonight One Longfellow Square gears up for Night 1 of 2 with legendary Jethro Tull lead guitarist Martin Barre. Barre has been joined at the hip to Tull’s lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Ian Anderson since 1969, when Barre replaced Mick Abrahams in the group’s lineup. His playing has provided much of the energy that allows the band to soar on recordings and in concert amid the beauty of Anderson’s melodies and complex lyrics. Barre’s solo work allows him to stretch out in directions that Tull normally doesn’t go, and to put his instrument into new sounds, genres, and musical contexts. Tonight Barre and his band present an acoustic performance of his solo work that will get underway at 8pm,

Check out some roots rock tunes this Tuesday during a free show at Gritty’s tonight. Starting at 9 local musician Travis James Humphrey will be playing a solo set of songs.

Empire’s Three for 3 weekly music series continues tonight with 3 local acts bringing the rock and/or roll to the stage with some high-energy sets of original jams. Beginning at 9 make your way upstairs to check out tunes from Jon King, TruckBody Jones and The Grumps.

Flask Lounge hosts another 0pen mic for DJs with a free dance party that encourages up and coming record spinners and producers to take a chance and get up on the tables during this fun event. All you need to bring are your records, CDs and controller. All formats of music are welcome. Tonight’s DJ open mic begins at 9pm.

Acoustic act Uke n’ Smile returns to Sea Dog Brewing Company in South Portland for another open mic this evening. All musicians of different skills and genres are welcome as this free and fun creative gathering gets started at 8.

Tonight you can check out a Blue’s monthly happy hour series called Verses vs. Verses. The event is hosted by Chris Robley & the Fear of Heights and features guest songwriters and word-writers (poems, essays, stories, manifestos, tweets) facing off to find what interesting kinks and connections arise while approaching the same theme from opposite angles. March’s theme is “LOVE is a four-letter word” and this evening’s featured guests will be award-winning songwriter Connor Garvey, former poet laureate of Portland, Marcia F. Folk-rock singer-songwriter Nat Hussey returns to the stage of Andy’s Old Port Pub this evening for a night of songs and stories that will start up right around 7 o’clock.

Philly-based band The Districts bring their soulful, jangly indie rock to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. This 18+ show gets swinging right around 8 with an opening set by musical duo Rosu Lup.

I really don’t like to tell you guys what to do whenever I write the ol’ Newz by The Nunz, instead I like to present a line-up of stellar shows in the hopes that something will strike your fancy and you’ll get out there to support some great, live, and often local, music. Well, I’m breaking the rules as I urge you to make some plans to head over to Portland House of Music and Events to check out a killer bill of power-pop, rock and punk acts tonight not just because all of the bands are awesome, but also because it marks the first time in over three years that Portland’s own Kurt Baker plays a show in his hometown. Kurt is bringing his band from Spain, aptly titled the Kurt Baker Combo, in support of their new record “In Orbit”, which is released on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records label, to kick-off their US tour here in Maine tonight. Kurt has always gone by the famous saying of “Have a Good Time All the Time” and tonight will be no different as he is joined by Seacoast rock n’ rollers, The Connection, Portland’s own piano-driven rock act, Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, and local pop-punk outfit, Borderlines. Of note is that Borderlines features 2 out of the other 3 members of The Leftovers – the act in which KB was in prior to taking off with his solo efforts – so who knows what could happen! I guarantee a blast and a half will be had by all so I hope to see you there, exchange some high-fives, and party ‘til we die as music starts up at 8 o’clock!

Rock and rollers Kicking Icarus are playing a free show at Flask Lounge. The band draws their influences from such acts as Yes, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, The Tragically Hip, and more. You can check ‘em out as things get swinging right around 9 tonight.

The fellas of the Dapper Gents Duo will be helping you properly get your folk-pop on this Wednesday as they play another free show at RiRa. Join this pair of talented Gents as they start playing some fun songs right around 9.

California-based reggae, ska, pop, punk, and surf-influenced rock n’ rollers, The Expendables, will be bringing their tunes tailor-made for good times to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. It might not feel like spring outside, but it’ll certainly sound like it inside PCMH as this all ages show kicks off at 9 with opening sets by RDGLDGRN and Tribal Theory.

Rap Night returns tonight at its new home at Aura! To celebrate they’ve booked on helluva night featuring some stellar stars of the local hip-hop scene including Ock Cousteau, Ill by Instinct, Ben Shorr, Peace Out Pat, and God.Damn.Chan. Of course there’ll be early and late open mic cyphers hosted by Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra. Doors open at 9 and God.Damn.Chan. will be rocking a special beat/DJ set on the early side (and then helping El Shupacabra keep the music going throughout the evening), and the first open mic cypher will kick off right around 10.

The Clash of the Titans returns tonight as its pit the solo efforts of founding fathers of prog/art-rock band Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, against one another during this week’s battle of the cover bands. The music starts upstairs at Empire right around 9:30pm.

More midweek fun will be happening at Crooners & Cocktails tonight as Hello Clarice brings some fun tunes to your Wednesday. Hello Clarice features the vocal stylings of Clarence “Jim” Roberts of Hello Newman and the musical mastery of pianist Mike Maurice as they play everything from Frank Sinatra to Billy Ocean. The pair prepares to perform beginning at 9:30pm.

I will admit that I am pretty excited for this week’s Clash of the Titans at Empire as it means I can revert back to the jaded, angsty teenager I once was many, many moons ago as local musicians come together on stage to perform the songs of Bright Eyes and Death Cab for Cutie. Fat Knuckle Freddy is back at Blue this Tuesday evening. Freddy is a local composer, instrumentalist and a songwriter who plays and writes American Primitive Music on cigar box, resonator, Weissenborn, acoustic, and fretless guitars. Blue Prairie returns to Andy’s Old Port Pub tonight with some country and western tunes. This evening’s free, all-ages shindig will get swinging at 7 o’clock.

New England Celtic Arts presents award winning Celtic folk artist Lennie Gallant at One Longfellow Square this evening. Gallant’s songs have been recorded by over 30 artists including Measha Bruggergosman, Ode de L’Acadie, The Rankins, and Jimmy Buffet and his songs have appeared in feature films, television series, and numerous theatrical productions. Los Angeles-based DJ and producer The Gaslamp Killer will be heading up at Run The Jewels After Party at Port City Music Hall tonight. Gaslamp Killer’s eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. The Mark Tipton Trio, which features Mark Tipton on trumpet, Don Pride on guitar, and Tyler Heydolph on bass, will be performing jazz standards and original compositions during a show at Blue tonight. This evening’s performance gets underway at 6pm.

Andy’s Old Port Pub welcomes local folk-rocker Brian Patricks. Patricks intertwines finger-style, rhythmic guitar with a hint of harmonica into his sets of originals and covers that span the folk, blues, roots and rock genres. Check out Patricks’ solo set as this free show begins at 7.

Big World, a band from Portland which focuses on taking compositions from jazz and other musical genres to explore the musical form through improvisation. Tonight they’re at Blue performing both original compositions and covers starting at 8 o’clock.

It has been said by more than a few listeners that metal band, The Body is the most brutal band on the planet. With ravishing grimness and impenetrable walls of noise, the duo creates music that goes beyond what is normally considered harsh and violent for anyone brave enough to take the plunge. Tonight they’ll be joined by the pitch-black spectral sounds of Muslin, the spine-tingling and soul-crushing noise-ballads of Lingua Ignota, and the shape-shifting doom of ‘Cuse Me for an 18+ show that starts at 8pm at SPACE Gallery.

Portland’s premiere string act the Amarantos Quartet plays a special show this evening at The Bearded Lady’s Jewel Box. Classically trained, each member of the quartet has also performed extensively with musicians from a wide variety of styles such as rock, pop, folk, world, and more. This group of supremely talented string players will begin playing right around 8pm tonight.

Empire’s Three for 3 music series continues tonight with the haunting sounds of love and loss from the American South courtesy of the Ghosts of Johnson City, as well as the stripped-down acoustic balladry to old-school rock n’ roll, gritty gypsy-blues and distorted proto-punk of Starcrossed Losers, and the punk and jazz-tinged rock and roll sounds of one-man-band RSO. Things get swinging upstairs right around 9 o’clock. 

Another Open DJ Night is happening at Flask Lounge.  Starting at 9, you can sign up for a slot DJing on some open tables and all you need to bring are some records, CDs, and a pair of headphones! This event is absolutely free and always a good time, so go on and check it out.

If you’re downtown this evening doing the First Friday thing, be sure to take in tonight’s performance by Okbari Middle Eastern Ensemble at Blue on Congress Street. Kick off the freakin’ weekend by busting a move to some classic rock covers as Amber Jack returns to the Hollywood Casino for a free show that’ll get rockin’ and rollin’ right around 8pm.

No Warning will be serving up all of your favorite party tunes tonight as they kick off a two night stint at the Penobscot Pour House at 9 o’clock.

Local folk-rocker Brian Patricks returns to The Daniel Coast Bar + Bistro this evening. Patricks intertwines finger-style, rhythmic guitar with a hint of harmonica into his sets of originals and covers that span the folk, blues, roots and rock genres. BUXTON

Modern country and rockabilly cover act the Whiskey Sour Band will get you boot-scootin’ out on the dance floor of Skip’s Lounge tonight as they play a free show starting up at 9pm.

Blues rock artist Jon King brings his trio up to The Rack this Friday. King’s music is well-known for his tight blend of blues and rock with a solid emphasis on guitar sounds. Check him and his  band out for yourself as things get swinging right around 9 o’clock.

Bethel-based band The Northside Ramblers bring their jammy medley of styles including rock, blues, folk, funk, and jazz to Easy Street Lounge tonight for a free show that’ll get swinging at 9.

Local musicians Tommy O’Connell and Eric Green join forces as The OG’s tonight as they bring some blues tunes to the stage of Guthries for a free and all ages show that’ll start up at 8 o’clock.

JJ’s Eatery welcomes local musician Mike Preston for some acoustic country tunes tonight. This free and all ages show gets started up right around 6:30.

Local artist Scott Lank will be playing at GFB Scottish Pub this evening. Starting at 8pm stop by to enjoy this free show featuring Lank’s performances of familiar classic rock and country from the 60s and 70s, as well a little bit of bluegrass, ballads and uptempo rockers.

Cover act Stolen Mojo will be playing some pop, rock, Motown, R&B, funk, disco and country jams from the last five decades during a free show at The Brunswick. Join in on the dance party as things get grooving right around 8:30.

Another free show happens this Friday at The Dogfish Bar & Grille as Americana/roots rocker Travis James Humphrey returns with some Happy Hour tunes. Travis’ performance begins at 5 o’clock.

Singer-songwriter Jason Ager brings his classic soul, R&B, and rock influenced tunes to the stage of Blue tonight for a performance that will begin at 6pm.

Get your weekend underway with lots of stringed things, foot stomping, and good times as Andy’s Old Port Pub welcomes back Mountain Emergency for an evening filled with bluegrass music. This free event is all ages and gets underway right around 7 o’clock.

Over at The Dogfish Bar & Grille local act The Waiters will be serving up some quality tunes for you to enjoy this finally Friday. The Waiters will be dishing out all of your favorite cover tunes starting right around 8 during this free, all ages event.

Front man for roots rock outfit Barefoot Truth, Will Evans, will be performing at One Longfellow Square this Friday evening. Local artist Pete Miller and his band will kick things off tonight with Miller’s blend of indie and folk sounds as things get underway at 8.

Bonaroo darlings and breakout act of the post-Phish jam band circuit, Umphrey’s McGee is back in Portland tonight for an all ages show over at the State Theatre. Joshua Redman and SPAFFORD will kick things off as music starts up at 8 o’clock.

Blue welcomes musician Bob Warren to the stage tonight. With his roots in the folk troubadour tradition, Bob’s writing is surprisingly diverse. From musicals to rock and everything in between, his music shares his humor, wit, and heart. Check out this evening’s performance as things get underway at 8pm.

Work it out at Port City Music Hall in Portland this finally Friday as a whole lotta dancing is sure to be going on with John Brown’s Body and special guests Raging Brass Reggae. The infectious funk, soul, reggae and dub sounds get going right around 8 o’clock tonight.

The Charleston, S.C., country-rock band specializes in  songs that often employ single-note guitar licks playing the melody. The best tunes on their 2014 self-titled debut sound like versions of mid-’60s Everly Brothers records, complete with Glen Campbell-esque guitar parts. They’ll be joined by openers Heyrocco, a South Carolina-based trio that embraces the early 90’s alternative boom with a sound that contains the melodic sensibilities and hard driving guitar sounds that gave that era a refreshing burst of authenticity that made it distinctive from the proceeding decade. Three talented singer-songwriters from right here in Portland will be teaming up once again for another evening of songs and stories over at Blue. Starting at 6 check out another In The Round Event featuring Max Garcia Conover, Griffin Sherry and Max Davis as they come together on stage to share their own original roots, Americana, and folk compositions.

Local singer-songwriter Bill Howard is back at Andy’s Old Port Pub this evening for a free event full of acoustic tunes. Bill will begin this all-ages show starting at 7 o’clock.

Grammy-winning guitarist, songwriter, and producer Eric Krasno and his band return to the stage of Portland House of Music and Events tonight. Krasno is also a founding member of Soulive and Lettuce and has worked with many Portland players as well. Psychedelic southern rock and blues outfit the Marcus King Band will open tonight’s show with a set starting up at 8 o’clock.

Electronic music comes in all sounds, colors, and textures, but drummer RJ Miller exploits the ambient side with chilled themes and moody soundscapes that you can check out tonight as he brings his latest musical endeavor, Jesus Cactus, to the stage of Blue. Miller expertly juxtaposes his drum kit with piano, keyboards, and analog synthesizers through infectious melodies that move and groove as things begin right around 8 o’ clock tonight.

Empire’s Three for 3 series, which offers up three great local bands for only a three dollar cover, continues tonight with (appropriately) 300 Dollars, TG9, and Valuables. Take in some terrific indie rock and roll tunes this Tuesday as things get underway upstairs at 9 o’clock.

Second-generation New Orleans musician Marc Broussard will be at Port City Music Hall tonight. Broussard sings and writes soulful R&B with a funk twist and pop hooks that are guaranteed to get you grooving this Thursday. Roots rock act the Jamie McLean Band and singer-songwriter Grant Stinnett will open tonight’s show as this 18+ event gets underway at 8pm.

The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. Tonight they’ll be joined by the Falmouth High School Jazz Ensemble as music starts up at 8pm.

Kilcollins will be pop-rockin’ all night long at RiRa on Commercial Street this thirsty Thursday.
