Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter and guitarist Dan Navarro will be at One Longfellow Square this Wednesday evening. Acoustic roots rocker and County-bred folk troubadour Travis Cyr will be joined by the Stay Glad Band at Portland House of Music and Events tonight as he celebrates the release of his brand new record, appropriately titled, “Stay Glad”. Travis’ pals Dan Capaldi, Dominic Lavoie and Frank Hopkins will do double duty tonight as they help comprise Cyr’s backing band as well as provide some sounds throughout the evening with their own musical projects Sea Level, Dominic Lavoie, and Line of Force (LoF hasn’t played in what seems forever! Cheekily named all-female Led Zeppelin cover band, Lez Zeppelin, will be tearing it up at Port City Music Hall tonight. I really don’t like to tell you guys what to do whenever I write the ol’ Newz by The Nunz, instead I like to present a line-up of stellar shows in the hopes that something will strike your fancy and you’ll get out there to support some great, live, and often local, music. Well, I’m breaking the rules as I urge you to make some plans to head over to Portland House of Music and Events to check out a killer bill of power-pop, rock and punk acts tonight not just because all of the bands are awesome, but also because it marks the first time in over three years that Portland’s own Kurt Baker plays a show in his hometown. Kurt is bringing his band from Spain, aptly titled the Kurt Baker Combo, in support of their new record “In Orbit”, which is released on Steven Van Zandt’s Wicked Cool Records label, to kick-off their US tour here in Maine tonight. Kurt has always gone by the famous saying of “Have a Good Time All the Time” and tonight will be no different as he is joined by Seacoast rock n’ rollers, The Connection, Portland’s own piano-driven rock act, Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, and local pop-punk outfit, Borderlines. Of note is that Borderlines features 2 out of the other 3 members of The Leftovers – the act in which KB was in prior to taking off with his solo efforts – so who knows what could happen! I guarantee a blast and a half will be had by all so I hope to see you there, exchange some high-fives, and party ‘til we die as music starts up at 8 o’clock!

Rock and rollers Kicking Icarus are playing a free show at Flask Lounge. The band draws their influences from such acts as Yes, King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, The Tragically Hip, and more. You can check ‘em out as things get swinging right around 9 tonight.

The fellas of the Dapper Gents Duo will be helping you properly get your folk-pop on this Wednesday as they play another free show at RiRa. Join this pair of talented Gents as they start playing some fun songs right around 9.

California-based reggae, ska, pop, punk, and surf-influenced rock n’ rollers, The Expendables, will be bringing their tunes tailor-made for good times to the stage of Port City Music Hall tonight. It might not feel like spring outside, but it’ll certainly sound like it inside PCMH as this all ages show kicks off at 9 with opening sets by RDGLDGRN and Tribal Theory.

Rap Night returns tonight at its new home at Aura! To celebrate they’ve booked on helluva night featuring some stellar stars of the local hip-hop scene including Ock Cousteau, Ill by Instinct, Ben Shorr, Peace Out Pat, and God.Damn.Chan. Of course there’ll be early and late open mic cyphers hosted by Ill By Instinct and El Shupacabra. Doors open at 9 and God.Damn.Chan. will be rocking a special beat/DJ set on the early side (and then helping El Shupacabra keep the music going throughout the evening), and the first open mic cypher will kick off right around 10.

The Clash of the Titans returns tonight as its pit the solo efforts of founding fathers of prog/art-rock band Genesis, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins, against one another during this week’s battle of the cover bands. The music starts upstairs at Empire right around 9:30pm.

More midweek fun will be happening at Crooners & Cocktails tonight as Hello Clarice brings some fun tunes to your Wednesday. Hello Clarice features the vocal stylings of Clarence “Jim” Roberts of Hello Newman and the musical mastery of pianist Mike Maurice as they play everything from Frank Sinatra to Billy Ocean. The pair prepares to perform beginning at 9:30pm.

New England Celtic Arts presents award winning Celtic folk artist Lennie Gallant at One Longfellow Square this evening. Binghamton, NY band Driftwood will be performing at One Longfellow Square. The act leans alternately into folk, old-time, country, punk, and rock for a sound that is completely all their own. Tonight local folk troubadour Max Garcia Conover will start things off with a set as music begins at 8pm.

Why bust out that Dark Side of the Moon vinyl when you can actually go out and hear some Pink Floyd live courtesy of The Machine? Tonight this beloved tribute band, which has built a strong reputation for their live shows, appearing at festivals like Bonnaroo, brings their Floydian meanderings to the stage of the State Theatre for an all ages show that’ll start at 8 o’clock.

Miss Maybell & Slimpickin’s bring some old time music of the Americana, jug band, ragtime, blues, jazz and country genres to Blue tonight. Transport yourself back in time as things get swinging right around 8.

Dynamic roots/rock band based outta Boston, the Adam Ezra Group, comes back to Portland for a night high-energy musicin’ over at Port City Music Hall. This 18+ show starts up at 8 with opening sets from local soul-infused roots/rock band Chris Ross and The North as well as folk act Goldenoak.

Check out a free show down at Salvage BBQ tonight as roots rocker Travis James Humphrey and his band play a bunch of barn burners for ya beginning at 8:30.

Brooklyn-based electrified honky-tonk surf duo, Crushed Out bring their rock n’ roll dance party to Bayside Bowl tonight where the music will get underway right around 9pm.

Mathew’s will be getting a solid dose of the rock and/or roll tonight as they welcome I Suppose You Know Karate, Color Hex, Mary Jane Motorcade (which is my new favorite band name, by the way) and Labor Pains to the stage for a full night of music. Things get crankin’ right around 9 o’clock.

Portsmouth’s funk-hop outfit Harsh Armadillo will be bringing the party to the stage of Portland House of Music and Events tonight. This Seacoast area act is ready to get on down so bust out your finest pair of Party Pants and prepare to shake what you’ve got out on the dance floor as things start up at 9 with an opening set chock full of funk, rock and ska from local band Skosh.

More in the way of high-energy, high-quality RnR (rock n’ roll!) happens at Empire tonight as three tremendous acts team up to bring the thunder this evening. Prepare to get rocked and/or rolled by Burning Time with Unconscious Disturbance and Fifth Freedom as things heat up right around 9 o’clock.

Get down on it with some of the best alt-rock tunes the 90s ever gave us with Hello Newman as they throw a party upstairs at Bull Feeney’s tonight. Grab some pals, drink some drinks, and enjoy tunes from such bands as Sublime, Blink 182, the GinBlossoms, Everclear, No Doubt and even Chumbawumba (yes, I just said Chumbawumba) as the (free) party starts right around 9:30.

Some serious getting down will be happening at Blue as jazz, funk, and fusion act Sassquatch returns for some serious fun. Get into the groove as things get funky starting at 10.

Folk-rock cover act Rippleton Cross will be performing an acoustic set at Andy’s Old Port Pub. This free, all-ages show will feature the pair performing renditions of songs by such artists as The Who, Joe Jackson, Simon & Garfunkel, Cat Stevens and many more as things get started right around 6pm.

Check out The Grassholes as they play some feel-good bluegrass tunes at Flatbread on Commercial Street tonight. Starting at 6:30, kick back, enjoy some beer, delicious food, and mighty fine tunes during this free, all-ages shindig.

Tonight Blue welcomes local act Lost Cartoons to the stage. The project consists of local indie singer-songwriters Greg Jamie (former owner of The Oak & Ax) and Vince Nez (Mousa & The Last Sip) and music will begin tonight right around 6:30pm.

The Portland Jazz Orchestra returns to One Longfellow Square tonight. This 18-piece jazz ensemble performs a variety of traditional and contemporary big band literature. The PJO plays works written by members such as Craig Skeffington, Willie Johnson, Chris Humphrey and Terry White in addition to literature composed by a variety of jazz artists including Tom Kubis, Matt Harris, Bob Mintzer, Bill Holman and Maria Schneider. Local act RUIN makes its SPACE Gallery debut as they headline an evening of heavy music that’s guaranteed to bring the thunder, especially with their unique blend of thrash-influenced metal. Atlanta’s Withered, Chicago’s Immortal Bird and Portland’s own black/death metal meanderers Shabti round out tonight’s thunderous bill as things get loud, awesome and super heavy starting at 8:30pm.

Jam out this Thirsty Thursday with A Band Beyond Description at Gritty’s in the Old Port. Get your free Grateful Dead freak out on starting at 9.

The super fun fellas in local act Kilcollins will be doing it to it over at RiRa on Commercial Street this Thirsty Thursday. Starting at 9, the boys will be rockin’ you with all sorts of tunes that you know and love alongside a handful of catchy original jams for good measure. Vermont-based folk-Americana act The DuPont Brothers return to fill Blue with all kinds of lovely sounds as they perform another Thursday night show starting up at 9 o’clock.

The Scolded Dogs return to Brian Boru to do a little partying during another free show tonight. Starting at 9:30 you can expect to hear some awesome originals as well as cover tunes from such acts as Johnny Cash, Parliament, Snoop Dogg, and many more.

Local folk-rock duo Rippleton Cross returns to Cole Farms this Wednesday evening to host another free and fun open mic event. PORTLAND

The Mark Tipton Trio, which features Mark Tipton on trumpet, Don Pride on guitar, and Tyler Heydolph on bass, will be performing jazz standards and original compositions during a show at Blue tonight. This evening’s performance gets underway at 6pm.

Andy’s Old Port Pub welcomes local folk-rocker Brian Patricks. Patricks intertwines finger-style, rhythmic guitar with a hint of harmonica into his sets of originals and covers that span the folk, blues, roots and rock genres. Check out Patricks’ solo set as this free show begins at 7.

Big World, a band from Portland which focuses on taking compositions from jazz and other musical genres to explore the musical form through improvisation. Tonight they’re at Blue performing both original compositions and covers starting at 8 o’clock.

It has been said by more than a few listeners that metal band, The Body is the most brutal band on the planet. With ravishing grimness and impenetrable walls of noise, the duo creates music that goes beyond what is normally considered harsh and violent for anyone brave enough to take the plunge. Tonight they’ll be joined by the pitch-black spectral sounds of Muslin, the spine-tingling and soul-crushing noise-ballads of Lingua Ignota, and the shape-shifting doom of ‘Cuse Me for an 18+ show that starts at 8pm at SPACE Gallery.

Portland’s premiere string act the Amarantos Quartet plays a special show this evening at The Bearded Lady’s Jewel Box. Classically trained, each member of the quartet has also performed extensively with musicians from a wide variety of styles such as rock, pop, folk, world, and more. This group of supremely talented string players will begin playing right around 8pm tonight.

Empire’s Three for 3 music series continues tonight with the haunting sounds of love and loss from the American South courtesy of the Ghosts of Johnson City, as well as the stripped-down acoustic balladry to old-school rock n’ roll, gritty gypsy-blues and distorted proto-punk of Starcrossed Losers, and the punk and jazz-tinged rock and roll sounds of one-man-band RSO. Things get swinging upstairs right around 9 o’clock. 

Another Open DJ Night is happening at Flask Lounge.  Starting at 9, you can sign up for a slot DJing on some open tables and all you need to bring are some records, CDs, and a pair of headphones! This event is absolutely free and always a good time, so go on and check it out.
